Hi everyone,

We've just got a new Asus laptop and would like to check how best to charge it the first few times for optimal battery life?

The user manual says to plug it in and charge for 3 hours the first time - though 3 hours will likely mean the battery continues to charge for a while after the battery has already fully charged (so overcharging?), so should that be a concern?

Any advice much appreciated, thanks! D

I'd say charge the laptop till you get to 100%, then disconnect from the power brick, let the power drain to 10% and then reconnect to charge the battery back up. New laptops are a little smarter, they don't overcharge but having a fully charged battery and not draining it periodically can and will degrade the battery over time(sooner than later).

Thank you very much, Lutfij.
Just one last thing please - so with first charge up, should I charge for 3 hours (which the ASUS manual says) or just charge until it is fully charged (which is likely less than 3 hours)? Either way, would it have an impact on the battery?

Lithium ion, lithium polymer, lithium [anything] batteries get stressed the most at their charging extremes. Firstly, follow the manufacturer's advise.
Secondly, many laptops have a battery saver mode that stops charging at ~80%. That will help with overall battery life.

Personally, I charge to ~90% and then unplug it and never drain it below 10% (yes, draining a lithium battery to near empty stresses the battery too). If I need to go into road warrior mode I will charge it to 100%, of course.

Example of a battery treated well - my iPhone 14 Pro (purchased mid-September 2022) just recently went from 100% battery life left to 99% battery life left in February 2024 (last month).

The "3 hours" in the manual is a generic time period, because they do not know the exact state of the battery when you get it and plug it in.

It might be a week old, or 6 months old.

Just leave it for the 3 hours, and don't stress.
