Hi !

I have this small fun activity in mind which involves a walkie talkie app called virtual walkie talkie. It works on lan by the first phone running the app acts as a local server and others join the local server running on the phone. Now I want to carry this wireless router out in a garden or public place and it would assign the ip to the first phone which i can start the local server on and other devices can join the first phone. I am not sure if this device TP-Link TL-MR3040 Mini Pocket 3G Wireless
will be able to assign ip address like our traditional home routers.

Can some one help me out please or any other such budget battery powered wireless router any one can suggest ?

Thanks !

There are not a lot of these devices on the market. The one you list tends to one of the more popular for use as a travel router.

The main downside to almost all these devices is they transmit much lower power wifi in most cases to conserve the battery.

These devices work just like your home router in regard to supporting client machines. Some have restrictions on how many devices they support again because of trade offs to save battery.

Even though that router is primary designed to take a mobile broadband signal and share it, it will work for your function without a active internet connection.

You might also consider a external battery pack with the properly voltage to match a more standard router. Most routers use power adapters and run on DC power. I know some run on 12 volts and I have run those off the car battery.
