Battlecraft 2.1 problem

I used to have Battlecraft working fine, but after I switched
graphics cards, I only got a grey window where the terrain
should be (note: I don't know if the problem is actually
related to the new card, it's just the only major change
I've done). Reinstalling Battlecraft gave me a few polys
in the window, but it's still impossible to do anything
(I can't even see what is ground and what is sky).

Old card was a 32mb. GF2 MX. New card is a 128mb. Radeon 9600XT.
OS is Win98SE. BF and all other games I've thrown at the new
card (quite a few) work fine.

Does anybody know a fix for this? I can't seem to find anything
on the net about it, so it's apparently not a common problem
(there's the raytracer.init fix in the BC readme for some Radeon
cards, but that appears to be another issue. And it doesn't help,
anyway). The few Radeon users I've spoken to about it don't seem
to have any problems, so it's rather puzzling.

Try a different graphics card driver version?

Two things to do.

1. Upgrade your graphic drivers..

2. COMPLETELY remove the drivers for your old card. Since you changed
chipsets, the old driver probably still exists, and much of it probably
still loads. There are also probably registry entries pointing to various
old driver files, and yes, this sort of thing causes weird issues just like
you are describing. In fact, I think I had a similar problem a long time
ago and completely removing my old driver worked like a charm.

They're the newest.

I used one of those 'Detonator killers' before I installed the ATi
drivers, so it ought to have been okay.

Anyway, my system died, so I have to reinstall everything. Perhaps
that'll make BC work again.

yeah, now I get a black window instead of a grey one. Progress...

I get exactly the same problem when running BC 2.1, however BC 2.0 works
perfectly. It was a fresh instal of 2.1 and I'm using the same graphics
card I had in my old machine which ran BC 2.0 perfectly aswell. If you
find a solution let me know, I'm stuck using 2.0 for the time being.

Out of interest, what are your system specs... I get the same problem,
and I've not switched video cards.

Athlon XP 3200+ (well, 2500 over clocked to faster than a 3200)
Abit NF7S V2.0 motherboard
1GB Crucial PC3200
Radeon 9700 Pro
3x 160GB 1xATA 2xSATA

Athlon XP 1800+
PC-Chips M848A rev. 2.1 (cheapest possible motherboard...)
512mb. Geil PC3200
128mb. Radeon 9600XT
1x4GB ATA
1x30GB ATA
1x80GB ATA

It has to be something with the Radeon, though. That was all I had
changed when BC started misbehaving. New motherboard, RAM and clean
Win install made no difference either (except for the colour of the
blank window...).
It's possible that it would help to try some older Catalysts, but
I'd rather avoid that.

oho. I'll try that.

I don't remember much of a difference between 2.0 and 2.1, so you
may not be missing much (but then, my memory isn't very reliable).

As I said in the other post, the only thing I can think of is to
downgrade the Catalyst drivers, but that might well cause problems
with other games and programs, so I doubt I'll try it.

There are some 5.1 catalyst drivers out now, I think I'm still using the
4.12... I might give them a go later and reinstall BC 2.1 and see what
happens.
