i was playing battlefield 1 and i was getting 100% CPU Usage all the time leaving my GTX 980Ti with around 70-90% usage. is there a fix for this? i play on max settings, 100% resolution scale, 1080p 144hz.
no it is that BF1 can take every thread you throw at it and an i5 only has 4 threads. For BF1 ideally you want a 4C/8T cpu or better, especially in multiplayer. there is no fix beyond getting a heavier threaded CPU, sorry. I have answered dozens upon dozen of threads like yours for BF1 on i5s. The sad truth is 4c/4t cpus are the new entry level gaming CPUs replacing 2C/4T parts in this category. Even Games like watch dogs 2, ghost recon wildlands...to name a few...will take every thread you have.

It is true. While intel has amd beat in IPC by a small amount and even a little more, for now, in gaming. those extra threads count a lot in CPU thread heavy games. Just google search i5, BF1, and bottleneck if you don't believe me. I have been building PCs for over 20 years. I have no reason to lie to you.

no im just saying that you said "upgrade" to a ryzen build or a i7, i7 4xxx yes that is a viable upgrade but a R7 1xxx? no. i dont see why id have to buy a hole new motherboard, ram, and CPU to get less fps in most games?

This is simply the way coding and how your CPU processes it works.

ok, agreed but entry level gaming??? that does not make any sense since its better than the new high end AMD CPU's and older i7's in games.
I never told you what to put in your PC i said more threads whether it is intel or amd. that is your choice. would a i7 4790K do better then your current setup, absolutely. Would it be better then a Ryzen build with 8C/16T...maybe. Is a CPU that is drop in compatible with your mother board the cheapest upgrade path, yes it is. i was only giving you options your reading to much in to the AMD side of the argument. If you want a drop in CPU go for it...if you want a 6C/12T or 8C/16T intel cpu with a new platform, go for it. I was only telling you the answer to your question of why your CPU was bottlenecking your GPU. How you fix it is up to you and your budget.

you may not like that it is true...but it is true. Games are using more threads, period. 4C/4T is now entry level in gaming IMHO...though you could argue not until AMD R5s then R3s launch it will be completely true. i was disagreeing with your statement about i5's being the new entry level in gaming, but yes if the i7 4790k is good then surely the i7 4770k is since they are the same CPU. id look out for the i7 4770k and sell my current i5 4690k then.

battlefield 1, watch dogs 2 and ghost recon wildlands are the only games that i5 struggles on. but thats about it. that doesn't make an i5 magically turn to entry level in gaming.
i5 6600k* and project cars was running well above 150++ fps so that benchmark doesn't matter, battlefield 1 seems to favour the i5's (but that was single player), the wicher 3 they seemed about the same, far cry primal prefers an i5, GTA 5 benchmark is pointless as its different every time due to random spawning, watch dogs 2 same as GTA 5 with random spawning but yes the i5 was pegged at 100% but that game is garbage and un-optimised, and rise of the tomb raider pefers an i5 even above 180+fps. overall the i5 was faster.
Yes it does...when a cpu can no longer keep up with new games being launched whether it is clock speed or threads as long as it can still run the game...it is by defination entry level. Meaning buy buying, in this case, a more heavily threaded CPU you get a better experience. And no those aren't the only games they are just the ones I listed because they are recent and popular. They will not be the last games to be CPU resource heavy. It is a trend that has been going on for a number of years. It is only recently where going from 4C/4T to 4C/8T and higher (lets say same CPU architecture to keep things simple) that you got a boost in frame rates (max min and average). For a couple years games used all 12 of my threads but relayed heavily on 1 thread while only using 20-40% of my other threads. When my main thread hit 100% my other threads wouldn't/couldn't use the other threads to make up for it. Now games are going the direction not one thread is maxed but 4-8 threads are maxed and then the remaining threads take a 40% usage rate or so...still not maxing out 6C/12T+ CPUs. The 8C/8T console's play a lot into this. Devs are getting much better at threading out of necessity. Those console CPUs are pretty weak IPC wise per thread so devs had to use all the threads at their disposal. It is sad seeing an era pass but 4C/4T as mainstream CPU is passing make no mistake about it.
