Just bought the game yesterday and am my wits end trying to figure out why
on earth it keeps CTD'ing immediately after the splash screen. I run an ASUS
A7N8X-D(r1.04wUBER 1007 BIOS)/XP 2800+ rig w/9700 Pro and have had the
Omegas, CATS of all versions installed with absolutely no luck. Finally got
so upset, I uninstalled all vid drivers and sat wondering, maybe will try
with just the default set that comes with XP itself and voila! The game
starts right up but of course things are castrated performance wise but it
does work nonetheless. I was up until 3am, went to bed and back scowering
the forums for answers so any insight here is very much appreciated,

Onboard, ASUS A7N8X-D w/nVidia Soundstorm, one of the best onboard solutions
out there but it shouldn't affect it anyhow, doesn't in any of my other
games, UT2k4 included...

I have a very similar setup and I use the Omega 4.3 driver. I would suspect
that you had remnants of old drivers remaining causing problems. Did you
use a driver cleaner? Good one on DriverHeaven.net. My settings are high on
everything except light maps and shadows which I have turned off.
What sound device are you running. Onboard? I found I get better sound and
performance with my Audigy 2 ZS card. Sound cards play a big role in
demanding games. Check your sound settings.
Also did you edit your Video Default con file to allow all refresh rates?
Change the 0 to a 1 on the AllowAllRefreshRates 0 line.
Found here on my PC: C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield Vietnam\Mods
\BfVietnam\settings
There is also a line of text to add to your default con file that helps the
sound.
Add this to the bottom of the text: Game.SoundBuffersize 400
Save and exit.
Try changing the sound to 48 channels or less.

This is the main reason I have stayed with the Cat 3.7 drivers for so
long. I have NO problems with any of the games others seem to.
Everything is stable ( I game a lot and can still leave the machine
running for weeks before rebooting ) so I would have to say stay with
what is known to work.

there was a work around it here in the forum..but I can't find it..it was to
do with creating a profile for it and setting the AA's...

Hairy, thanks for this, it was the refresh rate line that did the trick, now
running 16x12 32-bit, 64 channels very smoothly ;) much obliged buddy!
