You won't find anyone here who will help you with your problem.

Go to the next store and a buy a legal version. It's not that expensive and
its worth the money...

There are no illegal servers for Blizzard, they are all legit.
AT&T for one.
you 'could' use the pirited copy, but every once in a while, Blizzard
runs through the list and finds and kicks/mutes/bans illegal copies.
Imagine having a few high lvl characters and one day you go to find it
all gone (irony for a pirate, Yhaarr!!!), would it be worth it, really?

I am in no way condoning the use of illegal software.
did you know AT&T stands for American Telegragh and Telephone

Actually, there are private servers (non-Bnet) running D2/LoD and Mods
thereof. But you're right, Blizzard does consider them illegal.

Okay, coming from me, this must seem surprising, but is there a reliable
place to download the game plus expansion? A North-American friend of
mine would like to give D2 a try, but doesn't want to shell out money
because she thinks she might not like it. I have two spare, legit sets
of CD keys, one if which I could send her via email, but I can't upload
the CDs (no broadband). She looked at BitTorrent, but couldn't find a
working link. If all fails, I will bite the bullet and snail-mail her a
set of CDs, but if there's an easier way ...

Yes, I know, it's not exactly legal, though I did purchase my spare
copies of the game, and don't use them. And I'm terribly uninformed when
it comes to pirated stuff.

16GBP = US$31 thanks to our idiot administration.

You can get it from Amazon for $32:

I was just quoting the price from my local video game store in
Manhattan, which is undoubtedly overpriced.

Not so idiot: W. doesn't like his fellow citizen to travel abroad. So he
makes that option very expensive :)

Our administration? Did we tell you do create such a gross over sized
indebtedness, that some people want to do transactions in Euro rather
than in US Dollars?

Ah, Information. A property, too valuable these days, to give it away,
just so, at no cost.

Anything you bought you can give away. No illegalities there.

Copywrite law is only activated during the act of copying. Giving away
your copy of D2 (as compared to giving away a *copy* of your copy of
D2) is completely unrestricted.
