Any good naval games involving battleships? I've heard of Surface Thunder
and Fighting Steel, are they worth getting (if still obtainable)?

You may want to check out Navyfield - recently released free beta on
Fileplanet.

This is an online multiplayer battleship game - quite good if a little
limited.

Naval combat games seem far and few. I installed Fighting Steel a few
years back, but got busy with other stuff and put it to the side. I should
revisit it; because from reading the web there is a project to upgrade
Fighting Steel.

'The Fighting Steel Project is an ongoing project aimed at improving the
Fighting Steel simulation in any way possible including more navies, more
ship classes, and other features.'

While I can't comment on how good these are, cause it's been so long since
I've played them, here's some others that you might be interested in:

Great Naval Battles series.
Harpoon
Janes Fleet Command
NWS: Battleships Zenith (1930-1945)
Enigma Rising Tide
Lost Admiral Returns
Warship Extreme
Point of Attack 2

They're showing a new naval combat game called "Dangerous Waters". You can
d/l a demo of it to test drive. Not sure if you can control Battleships
(haven't tried it yet).

BTW You might want to post also this question in the
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.naval newsgroup.

And finally here's some other sites that might help you.

Now you got me interested in naval combat, having BB duke it out, subs
attacking, SBDs dive bombing, ... !!!! 😉

Gr8 response OD, thanks for the heads-up. :)

I get the impression Dangerous Waters is yet another sub sim. Much easier to
make then battleship games I guess. I'll probably follow the pack and get
SH3. I have SH2 but never got into it, maybe the better graphics will make
it more interesting.

But... I'm going through a battleship-funk at the mo', a New Jersey
broadside on my desktop, 4 newly acquired, battleship history books, re-read
my Janes Fighting Ships 1940, Googling for battleship gun wavs, just not
getting enough........... :)

PS: How do I save a wav in Windows Media Player. The wav is protected so
that "save target as" doesn't work but I can 'stream' it', so it must be on
my PC someplace right?

Ok, found it in an obscure temp directory.

I was going to say maybe in your temp dir. Cause with some online media,
they don't want you to save it to your HD. That's why when you use some
media players, you won't find a Save File As feature.

You can also just disable Javascript which will let you "save target
as".
