Hello,

Currently I am using a 15" Dell Laptop with Core 2 Duo 2.00 GHz and a 4GB RAM.

I am planning to upgrade my laptop since having this more than 5 years ago. I am only a casual user at home (web browsing via Chrome, Youtube, Facebook, watch a movie via HDMI). In the office, I do Java programming using this laptop in Eclipse. I also have Macro codes in my Excel workbooks and usually my sheets have tens of thousands of rows.

I prefer the larger screen ones for coding and watching movies. I am not really concern about the power consumption, my only concern is the power of the processor. I want to feel that power upgrade because it lags sometimes when I open a lot of tabs or play HD videos

I have already compiled and compared my possible laptop purchase but having difficulty knowing which is a better processor.

My choices of laptops have the following processors:
1. Intel Pentium Baytrail M N3540 2.16 GHz
2. Intel Pentium Baytrail M N2940 1.83 GHz
3. Intel Core i3-5005U 2.00 GHz

Also if I may add the following for comparison:
4. Intel Atom Baytrail T Z3735F 1.33 GHz (This is for tablet but I kind of like the design and portability of the Acer Switch 10)
5. Intel Celeron Baytrail M N2840 2.16 GHz (This is Dual Core but I also kind of like of the HP Stream 11 or 13)

What I plan to do is keep my current laptop in my office and buy a new one for home use. Thus, the Acer Switch 10 and and the HP Stream but I would also like to prepare just in case my current laptop dies.

Thanks a lot!

Firstly, if this is a backup and eventual replacement for your current laptop, you may want to bear in mind the screen size and maybe external docking options for larger screens and peripherals.

I would definitely NOT recommend Baytrail processors for someone doing coding etc. As you yourself observed, they're tablet oriented and low-power.

The Intel Core i3 mobile would be the lowest I'd consider, with maybe even a Core i5 as a better choice to do programming.
