BDROMs recognized in BIOS & Windows but won't recognize discs unless...

More PC aggravation... As the thread title says; BDROMs recognized in BIOS & Windows but won't recognize discs unless I boot up with the disc in the drive. Once I take it out, the drives will not recognize that disc or any other.

I have checked and rechecked cables, firmware, tried uninstalling them in device manager and a couple of other suggestions I found after searching the internet including MrFixIt, but nothing has worked so far.

Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

BDROM drives;
LG uh12ls29
LG wh14ns40

Some help would be appreciated!

Sounds like a filter issue to me. Open up regedit and navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} and look for any entries labeled "UpperFilters" or "LowerFilters". If there are any, delete them. Restart the computer and you should be good to go.

Nope, already tried that, those entries are not present. Thanks for the suggestion though. 😉

Nope, already tried that, those entries are not present. Thanks for the suggestion though. 😉

Just to be sure, you checked the key whose class was named "CDROM"? I only want to verify because this is THE symptom of a bad filter.
Otherwise, I could only suggest opening an elevated command prompt and running "sfc /scannow" without quotes. The issue is definitely software related, as before Windows is loaded the computer can use the disk drive just fine. If you have an anti-virus program installed you can try uninstalling that, as I have seen these programs completely lock access to USB devices, and them doing the same to a DVD drive would not surprise me.

Hi,

1) Does your motherboard manual specify any SATA connections meant ONLY for hard drives?
(My BluRay drive worked on one but I got burn errors so maybe not the problem)

2) Have you tried the BD drives one at a time?

3) Do mean BluRay movie discs, or any disc such as DVD+R, CD-R etc?

4) Microsoft's Fixit solution can be pretty good:

5) Finally, you could contact LG. Perhaps it's a common issue.

Tried the "sfc /scannow" and got "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

I should probably mention that I had the trial version if the newest Nero Burning ROM installed, and recently uninstalled it.

Nope.

Yes, when I tested the cables.

Tried that a few times, didn't work. As an aside, I have used it in the past and it worked for me, but not this time.

I doubt it, support is limited as these models are over a year old. I have looked pretty extensively for similar support issues with these particular models and didn't find anything that worked.

Tried that before and it didn't fix the issue, just tried it again and it still didn't fix the issue.

Probably should mention that I did a system restore back a couple of Windows updates last night because I was getting BSODs again and Kaspersky Internet Security shutting down (from IE10 I think), which seems to have helped that. Then I tried running SFC /scannow again and it repaired errors, and subsequent scans report no errors. Right now it's having trouble doing the verification though... so who knows. Still have the issue with the optical drives not reading discs though.
