[SOLVED] Been a While/Need Help With New Build

Hello all,

I know there is quite a few build threads on here that I can sift through but I wanted to start my own so I have a direct route to help lol. I have been out of the PC build game for years as I have been keeping my 12 year old PC on life support, but it is now starting to bite the dust. I do videography (video editing), and gaming from time to time, but nothing too intensive. Another hobby I partake in and spend alot of time doing is DVD/Blu Ray creation, but I am not sure what the best route to take for that is nowadays with everything moving away from physical media. In other words, do they still create built in blu ray drives or am I going to have to get a usb external blu ray disc writing device? I would like to keep the budget around $800 and was wondering if anyone could help me out with either where to find a good, quality, long lasting pre-built PC at the price point, or could recommend a parts list with current quality components. Please keep in mind that it's been a long time and I don't know much about SSDs, recent graphic cards, cooling systems etc. So I will be relying on your advice, but that is why I am here. Any help would be appriciated. Thank you for your time.

12 year old computer, it would be hard to go wrong. Gaming performance on even the most basic card is likely to be an improvement. Video editing mostly means decent amounts of RAM and an okay GPU for smoothly scrubbing through video.

They still make optical drives.

Hey there! Thank you for your help. I will look at these recommendations! I actually had a few hard drives for storage. I always only ran the programs on the C drive and stored everything else on either one of two built in mechanical drives or an external hard drive via USB. So yeah, I save quite a bit lol. I installed my blu ray writer drive after I bought it seperately so I wasn't sure if I could transfer it to the new PC or if I should probably just go ahead and get a newer model. Again, I greatly appriciate your help. Quick question if you don't mind... I have a 6 switch fan controller and multiple intake/exhaust fans in my current tower. Can those be transferred to this new case? The fan's switches control the speeds from the front of the tower. Can this tower fit both the fan controller and blu ray optical drive? I just didn't see more than what looks like one slot to pop out on the front of this case. Lastly, I'm guessing the stock cooler for the cpu is sufficient? Or should I look into a better cooling fan as well? Sorry for all the questions. I'm just not up to speed on these newer builds. Thanks again for your help.

If your old Blu-ray drive is SATA, it will work. Should be, pretty sure SATA came before Blu-ray. You don't have to use the new case either, so you could keep all your fans and controller. Just make sure your case will accept a full ATX board. If not we can get a smaller board.

A better cooler will help the CPU, so if we take out the hard drive, case, and blu-ray drive there is plenty of room in the budget.

Slightly better GPU for a few dollars, better long term power supply, and a CPU cooler. If you provide the case I can check the CPU cooler for clearance and the motherboard size.

For a bit more he could do this provided he can throw all these parts in his existing case. He would get a better GPU by a lot for an extra 60 and a better motherboard that will fit the case he has unless its mITX

Thanks so much for your help everyone. The name of the tower I have been using for years escapes me at the moment and I can't remember, but It's fairly big and currently holds 3 HDDs, 6 fans, hyper 212, Nvidia graphics card, internal mounted fan controller etc. I'm fairly certain it will work to save me some money with this new build. Yes, the BR drive is SATA. Great to hear I can just transfer that too. I've been meaning to clean out all the crap from my HDDs and can pop those into this new build as well to spring for that cooler. You guys are great. Thank you again.

Sorry, I clicked on the Parts list with the MSI motherboard and it said that their is a compatibility issue. Something about the BIOs, mounting adapter for the cooler and power supply compatibility issues. Are these just things to consider or is it saying these things won't work together? My apologies, I am just a bit ignorant on these types of things lol. Thank you again for everything.

As it sits, you probably would have to get an LGA1700 mounting kit from Scythe. ASUS motherboard had backwards compatible LGA1200 mounting holes. You could re-use your old CPU cooler as well in that case.

Maybe add a pack of fans so that you can put in some new ones?

Sorry. Got crazy busy and just now saw this. You're probably right. I should just go ahead and get new stuff including the fans. So what you're saying is everything should work if I get the Asus motherboard and just use the old cooler? Otherwise, with the MSI board, I would have to get the mounting kit for the Scythe cooler? To be honest I just want what is easiest and best quality for the price. I don't necessarily have to use the old cooler and I'm willing to get a new one that is compatible with the Asus or MSI and pay a bit more if I have to. I just want everything to be compatible and keep it cool with no compatibility issues. Thank you again for your time and help.

Some motherboard makers decided to include both mounting holes which have slightly different spacing. There is also a minor difference in the height of the CPU, but most coolers still work.

Getting new fans is just prudent, but the heatsink is reusable basically forever. You can also just get an LGA1700 mounting kit for your 212 if you wanted to use an LGA1700 only motherboard.
