I'm trying to get my first build going (noob) but I need some help on which way to go .
This will be used by the whole family including my son for games so I'd like it to be a noticable upgrade over the hp laptop which uses a A10 4655m cpu with radeon hd 7620 + hd 8670m gpu.

I've been looking around and my head is spinning, which is why I am looking for ideas.
It would goes without saying (but) it would be nice to get the best I can for about £600/£650
if possible I'm looking at an r5 1400 or 1500x cpu with an rx 470 or rx570 gpu but its the rest of the stuff to keep within the price range that I'm struggling with ( If indeed the above is possible in this price range ) it will also need a copy of windows and hopefully quiet as it will live in the living room .

please help and thank you

Hellfire's build is fairly solid for the money.
I might suggest getting a 1400 cpu which will have very marginal decrease in performance and use the extra $20 for a better 550w psu.
Reason for that is that way you have a PSU capabile of any future upgrades instead of your PSU already being maxexd out and having to spend way more money in the long run upgrading the PSU again.

The power requirement of that build is around 300w. There is still around 150w of headroom which should be more than enough for any kind of upgrades or overclock unless you Crossfire, which actually is not recommended. But incase you wanna go that path, you can always purchase a Windows key later on and activate it and use that money for something else... https://www.howtogeek.com/244678/you-dont-need-a-product-key-to-install-and-use-windows-10/
