I'm in a very old house, which hasn't replaced its ancient carpet - it's not fuzzy, and quite hard. Right now I'm going the no socks route and I have an anti-static wristband. I'm working on a wood table with metal legs.

Safe enough?

Hi,

Yes - a an ESD wrist strap connected to the cassis is correct, while avoiding any walking on carpet or wearing clothes that can be electrostatic discharged so that sparks occur.

Remember - an electrical caharge of several 10s of thousands of Volt will not damage electronics - it is the discharge that will damage the electronics!
So, You and the working area in your case the chassis needs to have the very same electrical potential by using an ESD wrist strap connected to a bare metal piece on the chassi.
Please see the link above.
