Hi,

This is my first step into overclocking, though I have been building PC's for the last 15 years or so, I felt it was time to have a go at something new. My computer is :

CPU : Q6600 G0
Motherboard : Asus P5QL-PRO
Memory : 4 x 2GB DDR2 800
PSU : FSP 750W

Anyway I had read a couple of guides regarding voltages etc, but thought I would see how I got on if I just changed the FSB from 266 to 333. Everything else in the bios including voltages was left to AUTO.

I saved the changes and restarted, the computer rebooted at 3Ghz and had set the memory to DDR2 833Mhz I believe.

The computer loaded Windows without any problems and a quick short test with all cores at 100% worked without error.

The temps were a bit high but thats not unusual at stock speed they are high anyway, I am replacing the cooler in a couple of weeks with a better model and would be running the CPU at stock speed until then.

Anyway with all the talk on voltages and other changes have I done this right or am I missing the point?

Thanks & Regards
Jon

Well, sort of. :)

We do not like CPU AUTO voltage settings. There's a really good chance that the AUTO setting is applying more voltage than it needs. Try putting everything back to stock. See what the BIOS tells you your voltage is. Use that for your voltage setting.

There's a very good chance that you can reach 3.0 GHz. with the stock voltage. If you can, you can use the stock cooler. Keep your load temps under 70 C.

Thanks for the info, I have returned everything to stock and will check the voltages and adjust if neccesary.

The CPU under load at stock already hits 70C, which is why I was getting a new cooler anyway, I did have some problems lining up the stock cooler when I installed the processor and I think the thermal paste wasn't applied properly as under load Core 0 reads 70 C and Core 3 is around 63 C.

The wife is getting me a Titan Fenrir for crimbo and I am buying myself a HAF932 case so hopefully airflow and temps will come down and I will be able to overclock the CPU to 3Ghz without too many issues.

Thanks again for your time
Jon
