Beginner's question: Why won't they do what they're told?

My whole family of Sims is refusing to use the telephone or pour
themselves a drink at the bar. The cleaner keeps sniggering about
something in the bathroom (just like home!). It's almost as if there
is an invisible wall around certain things in the house. What is it
about and how do I get past it?

Make sure they can get to the bar, as in don't put it right next to the
wall.
Make sure that the phone, if tabletop is in the correct postion and not
backwards.
Something is probably blocking their path to stuff.

The simmies need a gridspace behind the bar to be able to use it
You can tell wether things are in the correct position by the big green
arrow
if its pointing towards an open area then your sim can use it
against the wall or reverse on another item and you will find your sim doing
stupid stuff like look at you whilst shaking their fist.
