Benchmark 4870 - low score?

I was wondering your scores of HD4870 512 of either 3D Mark or Furmark. I haven't clocked GPU, neither CPU or motherboard.

I've been raising the question whether there is something wrong with my 4870-card. In 3D Mark I get 8000, and in Furmark my FPS is an average of 50. Doesn't that seem to be rather low?

My system:

E8400 CPU 3.0
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS4
HIS 4870
Corsair TWIN 2X2048-6400
Corsair HX520W
Vista x64

I also replaced the stock cooler (because I thought it was too loud) and installed an AC Twin Turbo. Not sure if that does matter but it's worth mentioning.

Temps at idle is around 50, for CPU, GPU and system.

CCC version is 2008.0820.2135.36847

Thanks for any kind of help.

well those idle temps are actually REALLY high... they should be in the low 40's or even less especially for the cpu

Post your entire 3dmark score including cpu score and what not

In 3dmark with a q9550 at 3.85 ghz and a 4870 overclocked i pass the 18 k mark...

your cpu score should be around 3000 and your other scores should be around... high 5000's low 6000's for Shader model 2.0, and over 8000 for shader model 3.0

you should probably be scoring around 14000 with your build

it does seem kind of a low score. You have a good system, you cpu being a dual core will result in a lower score compaired to quads as 3d-mark favours quads. But you should be getting a higher score than you have. I would think more around 9-10k

You should be 12,000 to 14,000. I get 9000 with a e8400 and a 4670.

First get the temperatures where they need to be. After that come back for more help if you still need it. You cooler is to loose or you used to much thermal paste. A e8400 should Idle in the 20s when everythiong is done right at stock speeds.

My e8400 Idles at 32c nd I have it overclocked to 4.05 with 1.38 vcore.

no 9000 w/ a 4870 ? are you daft?

I got 12000 with a 8800 GTS 640 and a 3.2 ghz e6420.... considering the e8400 is faster than my old 3.2 ghz core 2... he should score a little over what i did... I scored around 2900 on the cpu...

A 4870 absolutely destroys the 8800 gts 640... 9000 with any new semi-high end card today says something is really wrong with your system

I still don't get how you can think an e8400 and a 4870 would get 9000... where have you been for the last 3 years? over 9000 has been customary for that long...

If you had over a 3rd grade education you could read!! 46 70 not 48 70. READ!!!! 9000 on a 46 70 is good. I was showing him there is a problem with his!!!!!!!! "LEARN TO READ!!!!!!!!!!

IF I had a 48 70 I wwould expect 16000 on my rig give or take 500 or so.

Oh, did I offend you childish demeaner? Oppologys if I did, but I though the comment was directed to me. Since my post is the only one that says 9000, and seeing that you quoted 9000 4 times.

I agree with you that col-p-todd is an idiot. He cant get the darn amd scores out of his head.

First of all, which versions of 3D Mark you talk about? 3DMark05, 3DMark06, 3DMark Vantage ?!
I think that the OP(gurre) might mean 3dMark Vantage, which is pretty much ok for that build; and about FurMark: a what settings? Because on 1900x1200 8xAA 50 FPS is way too much for HD4870, or 1024x768 0xAA is way too LOW for HD4870. SO there is a big difference for the setting you use.
And Ares_ you definitely tolk about 3dMark06, because 14000+ is not possible for 3Dmark vantage :)
I suggest you all type which 3Dmark you mean.

P.S.
If you can run Tropics Demo on 1680x1050, 8xAA, 16xAF, dx10, Shaders=high, Reflection: on, Ambient occlusion: on !
This will measure your PURE GPU performance regardless of CPU performance; On settings above HD4870 have to score ~850.

no way man, i have an AMD 5000+ black edition OCed to 3.12GHZ and a 3870. my 3dmark score is about 10500. his score should totally PWN mine. are you using catylist 8.10? i installed that and my 3dmark score lost around 800 points. go with 8.7 if that is the case.

lol oppologys

:D

anyway I think yonef is correct... its vantage hes talking about and not 3dmark 06
and for 8000 in vantage thats about normal at stock

sorry @ todd because I believe now he was talking about Vantage as well

Accept my sincere oppology :p please and forgive me *grovels at feet of thread*

About the temps - My CPU and GPU are pretty much the same as the system temperature. How can I lower those temps without putting in several air fains that make air flow better in the case itself?

And I was happy lowering my GPU temperature from 80 with the stock cooler to 45-50! :D

I'm using 3DMark Vantage
Furmark, settings 1280x1024

Oh, and I wasn't able to run that Tropic demo. An error occured saying something about not being able to create a log, and failed opening an dll file.

Damit, not able to edit my previous post. I apologise for three posts in a row.

Byt the way, my temperatures. SpeedFan says a system temperature of 41, with CPU 44 at idle, whereas CoreTemp says 49. Not sure which one to trust, but I rather go with the higher one than with the lower :p

good, your using sppedfan:)

do you have rivatuner? you can use that to control your graphics card's fan speed. OR if you have the new 8.10 ATI drivers, you could just simply use the new fan control option. i have no experiance with the new fan speed control thing in cataylist becuase i dont have a 4xxx series card.

as for controling CPU fan speed, i dont have any software to recomend becuase i dont have a need for one.
anyone know of CPU fan control software? :S

The best solution to reduce temps in the 48xx series is here. It maintains the autofan so it isn't one fan speed for all.

As to Vantage scores, my vanilla (750/900) 4870 GPU scores were roughly 8300, and the standard OC (the 4870 OCs quite easily with no increased temp issues - couple of degrees at most) at 800/1100 were 9150. Please note, these are GPU scores only. The overall scores vary a lot depending on the CPU, or whether you are using an nVidia card which skewers the CPU results as well.
