Hello,

I'm currently a Computer Science major. My school offers a computer information systems degree as well. Now, these degrees are very close at my school in terms of classes. In fact the CIS degree only differs by about a semesters worth of classes. I'll be graduating next may with CS. I'm considering coming back the following fall semester and doing the classes to obtain the CIS degree. My question is, is it worth it? Will I look better with two degrees? Like I said, it could be done with just one additional semester, maybe even a summer semester.

Thanks

Solution
Additional education is always worth it.

Potential employers are primarily interested in one thing: can you do the job? And all so often the "job" grows in both scope and depth.

The more you can offer the better your chances. But remember that you also need to demonstrate that you are honest and reliable. Plus a good team player who can communicate and pick up the extra load when necessary. Not be a problem for your manager and co-workers.

Give the following a try: Start looking at IT positions and the desired skills, education, and experience needed. Things are changing fast so the more you know the better. And you will always need to keep learning. Your present learning skills should be kept sharp.....

Take advantage of the CIS opportunity but start your job search anyway. It will take a couple of months for you to get a sense of the employment process and a couple more months thereafter to start submitting applications. As I understand it there is a real need for IT skilled people - the extra efforts will be worthwhile. Start working on the application process and practice interviewing skills. Learn about the companies that you apply to.

By the time you are finished with the second degree you will be good candidate for any number of employment opportunities.

Real, hands on experience in your chosen field is far more valuable than any number of college degrees. The only thing a degree tells me is that you're <potentially> trainable. However, if I have my choice of a candidate with 4 years experience and no certs/degree and one with no experience but one or more degrees/certs, assuming all else is equal I'll take the experienced candidate every time, I don't have to train him/her up and I know they can handle whatever I throw at them from day one.
