benefits on tethering Mi-Fi through a router

I have recently gotten a at&t 4g mifi modem as I live a little farther out and do not have access to broadband/dsl. I'm curious and can't seem to find a direct answer what is the benefit to tethering this to a actual router. Would it help even speeds across multiple devices? Would it help with ping in online games? Curious before I go and spend money buying tethers and modems.

Check very carefully which routers you can tether the device to, not all support it. Some devices do not provide the information the router manufacture needs to tether so some can not be tethered to any router.

Mostly people do this because a router has better wireless radios than these small devices. Since many are battery powered and most are designed to be portable they have traded radio power for these features. It also sometimes helps because you need to place the 4g device near a window to get good signal and you can use the usb cable to extend the router farther into the house giving better coverage.

In general there will be no effect on the speed you get or the ping times in games. Playing games on any 4g is very hit and miss since it depends how many other people you are sharing a cell tower with.
