I saw a friends samsung hdtv 24 inch that he was using as a monitor in his rig, and his picture seemed sharper than mine even though I have a gtx 970 and he is using onboard intel graphics. I am wondering if I have my settings setup badly or whether I need to clean my display. Which leads to another question... how would i go about cleaning my monitor? I have all the latest drivers for my gpu and it performs really well, but I feel my monitor settings may be holding it back. I have my resolution on 1920 x 1080 and my games run on that display fine. I'm just not sure whether my monitor settings are at their finest.

Solution
you want to clean your monitor with nothing but tap water (if clean enough) or distilled water, and a microfiber cloth.

you want to use the cinema/theatre/movie picture preset. before you select that, restore your monitor to factory default, and restore all settings changed in Windows related to monitor calibration.

after youve done that, you open the built in Windows calibration tool, by simply searching for it, and follow the on screen steps, which will guide you through the process. make sure to never change the picture preset while doing this, you only want to change contrast and brightness if necessary. do change the gamma if the test isnt perfect already. you can test this by moving the sliders a little bit.

before starting i advise you to take a photo of before and after, to see if you like the results. more often than not, majority of consumers cant stand the way accurate colors look. im saying that because once its accurate, youll in an instant, be distracted by all other displays you come across as displaying a blue tint over the whole image. thats partly because manufacturers ship displays in the standard picture mode, and with the standard color temperature. youll get used to it within a few days though. what calibrating does is brings out more details you couldnt see before, and if i have time later, i can show you a before and after of tomb raider on xbox one, which people probably wont believe are true photos.

All the best!

ok thank you, will i just simply have to test the values of colour and contrast, are there no values I should be aiming for? or is the best for me? also how can I test whether the newer display shows more details and is generally better?

select the picture mode and then check if your results are good enough for the windows calibration test. if you pass without any obvious faults, then i wouldnt worry. when it comes to picture quality, thats one thing, but color accuracy is another. even if you were to calibrate the monitor in a bright room, turning off the lights makes it not accurate any longer. the goal here is to make sure the monitor isnt defective.

photos, use your phone if you have to.

I found changing it to cinema mode made a massive difference so thank you very much
