Hey guys, last night out of the blue my monitor stopped working and started displaying a 'No signal detected' message.

It was working fine all day long, so i started a download and walked away for a couple of hours. When i came back the monitor was in power saving mode, or atleast i thought it was. Because when i moved the mouse and pressed a couple of keys on the keyboard the picture did not return. So at the moment whenever i turn it on, i get no picture at all, and the little light on the monitor is orange, as if it were in powersave mode, but its not.

Now i did not change anything, i did not move anything or mess with any settings, so how can it be working one hour and not working the next?

I am using a white DVI cable(which i have been using for years now), and going from one of the ports on my graphics card to the DVI port on the monitor. I tried the other DVI port on my graphics card, which also did not work, and i tried the DVI port on my motherboard, which did not work. I tried using my brothers VGA cable with a VGA-DVI adapter which also did not work. I also tried switching through all the inputs which include DVI, D-Sub and HDMI, which did not do anything. I obvisouly can not do anything related to software(such as update drivers) as i get no picture on my monitor.

So i am all out of ideas and incredibly frustrated and now i turn to you guys. Do you have any ideas or suggestions as to what may be causing this and how i can fix it? I seem to recall it happening to me once before but i cant remember if it was the same problem and if it was, how i fixed it.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Intel i5 2400 cpu
Nvidia gtx 560(i think)
8gb RAM
Cant remember the mobo

Thanks in advance for any help,
big

You really have to try to isolate the issue. Also try to get another DVI cable if you can. Many times the cable can go bad.

Try the monitor on another computer and see if it works. If the monitor is ok, then it's either your cable or video card.

If the monitor DOESN'T work with another computer then something may be up with the monitor itself. You may need to get it fixed or get a new one altogether.

Ok i managed to borrow my brothers monitor to test out some different setups. He currently uses a blue VGA cable with a DVI adapter on one end to go from the DVI port on his graphics card to the VGA port on his monitor which works fine. Heres what ive tried so far:

-I used his VGA cable with the DVI adapter and tried plugging it into both DVI ports on my graphics card into the VGA port on his monitor.
-I used his VGA cable with the DVI adapter and tried plugging it into both DVI ports on my graphics card into the VGA port on my monitor.

-I used my DVI cable and tried plugging it into both DVI ports on my graphics card and into the DVI port on his monitor.
-I used my DVI cable and tried plugging it into both DVI ports on my graphics card and into the DVI port on my monitor.

-I removed his DVI adapter, and tried going from the VGA port on my motherboard to the VGA port on his monitor.
-I removed his DVI adapter, and tried going from the VGA port on my motherboard to the VGA port on my monitor.

None of these worked, and im now even more confused as to what could be causing this problem. I only bought the computer in July, so surely it cant be the graphics card, can it?

Thanks,
big

Did you try plugging in your monitor into his computer? It seems the common denominator among all these setups is YOUR computer. I think something is wrong there.

The VGA port on your motherboard won't work if there's a video card attached. Try removing your video card and using the motherboard VGA again.

My hunch is there's something wrong with your video card.

Ok just tried plugging my monitor into his computer with my DVI cable, and all worked fine. So then it must be something wrong with my computer and not the monitor, any ideas as to what it might be?

Hopefully i dont have to buy a new graphics card 🙁
