I purchased the BenQ XL2420z 144hz Gaming Monitor, but I am unable to put the refresh rate from 60hz to 120hz as I am using HDMI and not Display Port I can't put it on 144hz either way.

When I try to set the refresh rate in AMD Catalyst Control Centre to 1080p @ 120hz it changes the resolution down to 1440 x 900.

All the drivers are up to date.

Would changing from HDMI to DisplayPort M-M fix this problem and let me display 1080p @ 144hz?

Solution
You can attain a 144Hz (or 120Hz) refresh rate @ 1080P using either the DVI-DL port or the DisplayPort 1.2 port. I believe HDMI 1.4b supports 1080P @ 120Hz (though I haven't been able to confirm this). However, if your video card does not have HDMI 1.4b output, you will not be able to attain 120Hz on the monitor. What video card do you have?

I emailed BenQ about it and they told be I need to use either Dual-Link DVI or Display Port, I have a R9 290 so I think the problem is just HDMI doesn't display at 1080p with those rates. :)
