Does anyone here have a BenQ XL2730Z? If so, how do you feel about it? I am highly considering picking one up since they're on sale at the moment and it will be my first 1440p monitor and first experience with Freesync.

Also I have a Sapphire R9 280x, would that be enough to make this monitor worth it? Or would I need to upgrade my GPU?

Solution

So you're advocating spending at least $1,000, maybe $1500...
Ofcourse you will need to upgrade your GPU. R9 280X cant handle 1440p resolution. I recommend you to wait for R9 490X which will be announced around June 10. R9 490X will easily be able to handle 1440p gaming and you will get Freesync ofcourse. You can also think about buying the NVIDIA's latest GTX 1080 which is the most powerful GPU on planet yet. But then you will need to go for Gsync monitor. The ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q would be a nice choice if you want that. Rest depends upon you. Good Luck 😉

Ahhh well thanks for the info, I didn't know that. I have no interest in the 1080 since it's over $900CDN and picking up a G-Sync monitor like the ROG SWIFT is $1000...
I guess I'll hold off on this monitor for now since buying something like an R9 390x is pointless.

Sorry could you please explain a bit more what you mean? Which monitor has the 24 bit IPS? The ROG SWIFT is about $450 more than the BenQ at NCIX.

The monitor is $200 off right now during this sale, which is partly why I want to pick it up. Would I still be able to enjoy the beauty of the monitor on my 280x, even without using Freesync? Or would the 1440p resolution be screwed up?

I agree with Suzuki, http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-mg279q-27in-freesync-144hz-9d-110309.htm
This Monitor is much better than the BenQ one. IPS panels are truly worth the money and when you are getting one with 4 ms response time then you should grab it.
R9 280X will struggle to push frames above 30 fps as the resolution will be raised up. You will have to lower the settings of games to run them at 60+ fps

Incorrect. An R9-280X is absolutely capable of 1440P at some pretty decent frame rates: http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/61201-amd-radeon-r9-280x-vs-nvidia-geforce-gtx-770-4k/

So I could pick up the BenQ and run it on my 280x for now, and still enjoy the beauty of the monitor(without FreeSync) until I pick up a new AMD card months down the line? That's the bottom line for me right now.

And as far as the asus-mg279q goes, that's an extra $260 over the BenQ. Is it worth the extra $260?

Yes you can get around 50-60fps 1440p at medium-high settings with your current GPU. But i really think u should rather go for Asus MG279Q. Even if it forces you to reduce your budget for GPU. R9 490 or 480X would be pretty powerful GPUs in affordable prices.

G-Sync is not worth the extra $300 over a regular monitor, and you certainly don't need a GPU upgrade in order to run it properly. Does it hurt? No. Does it help? It might but that ultimately depends on what you do with it.

Asus MG279Q isnt a G-Sync monitor, its a Freesync monitor and yes for a Hardcore gamer it does matters however it should work fine without Freesync also. And yes buying a new GPU is certainly helpful given the fact that the newer GPUs will be a lot more powerful (We have already seen the performance of GTX 1080) and provide much more stability and compatibility for DirectX 12 Based games.
Overall it depends on the Thread owner, if he can live without Freesync then he can rather get a NVIDIA GPU like GTX 1080 which doesnt costs a lot but performs much more faster than a GTX 1080 and I dont think AMD will be able compete with this. He can save around 200-300$ in this way.

So you're advocating spending at least $1,000, maybe $1500 when all is said and done when the OP just wants a 1440P monitor. That is really the question on the table here. This is not meant to be an AMD vs. NVIDIA debate which is what you are turning it into. Either the monitor in question works with the OP's GPU or it doesn't. The monitor in question is capable of working with the OP's GPU, is it not?

I may be missing something but it appears that Krishan Mourya first says

" you will need to upgrade your GPU. R9 280X cant handle 1440p resolution"

then says

R9 280X will struggle to push frames above 30 fps as the resolution will be raised up.

then

Yes you can get around 50-60fps 1440p at medium-high settings

Yeah I was wrong before, I rechecked the benchmarks after that. Sorry for any trouble.

I usually look at my main monitor head on, I don't sit off to the side, so viewing angles aren't a huge deal for me.
