Bent HDMI pins on GPU

Hi All,

I've seen some similar threads but nothing specific to graphics cards so here goes: I've got an HIS Radeon HD 7750 card in my HTPC. In getting the right mix, resolution, audio and getting rid of onboard drivers, the HDMI jack on the card has been getting a lot of use. I'd taken the card out before and noticed that some of the pins in the rear of the socket were bent back. I thought little of it and bent them back into place.

After some more plug swaps this week I got a lot of snow on the screen. I changed monitors and it was still there. One of the monitors is actually a TV so I played that from the cable box and it was fine. Researching here and a few other spots suggested a bad cord or poor connection. The case is a good one but the exterior slots to protect and separate the cards was a little bowed out and keeps the HDMI plug from really seating fully. I took off the cover, pulled the card and saw there were several permanently bent pins again -- different ones than last time. Bent them back and put in an HDMI cord and, again, different pins bent back and stayed there. I had a look at the HDMI socket on the motherboard for comparison but it seems better made with a closed back and possibly a tensioner in there. It was a much smoother fit.

Now I'm a fair hand with a soldering iron and have a good rig but it is setup for the blunt force trauma of making guitar amps. If, as I suspect, the HDMI plug is just shot, replacing it looks like it would need some micro-soldering. I've also thought about getting a male-female adapter, stuffing it in there, retensioning the pins and bolting it down. I suspect there are other options too so I'm here now asking for expert opinions on what to do.

Thanks for looking, sh

I got the HTPC second-hand. It's all mine now.

We've been toying with getting a better card for the HTPC and moving this one to my machine. I'll at least look at HDMI sockets at Mouser and see if the pin patterns might fit. FWIW, I'll need the DVI port for a second monitor so I can't just convert that -- I have to do that anyway. sh

Issue solved, mostly ...

It was the pins on the HDMI port. On this one they look like the tines on a thumb piano. The male end pushes three or four of them back but they have no natural spring tension after the cord is removed. The mobo version has a closed back and it felt like there was a slight resistance back out which might be a retensioner.

I put the card back in, left the top panel off, plugged the cord in and gently pushed the pins snug with the eraser end of a pencil. Everything worked fine. To keep fatigue down, that cord will be as permanent as possible -- at least on the GPU end.

Thanks all, sh
