So my 280x has bitten the dust and I have been refunded £220. So now I need a new gpu for my 1080p gaming.

I have been reading up and it looks like I can afford (for a few £ extra) a 970 or a 290x.

As the 390x is basically the same as 290x and I have seen the 290x for £200 I'm thinking this is a good option. Also in favour of the amd card is I've heard dx12 highly improves amd, and doesn't do much for nvidea.

The positives I see for 970 (£260) are the lower power consumption and cooler operating temperatures which will help with a longer life.

I plan on keeping the card for at least 3 years and want to be playing hi/ultra as long as possible. My refund was very simple with this card, which is making me think if I go amd and the card overheats and dies, I can get another card after. Tempting

This would be your best choice in that price range:

Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 390 8GB Double Dissipation Video Card (£249.98 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £249.98
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

The GTX 970 is a slightly stronger performer in the 1080p resolution (and as you noted more energy efficient), but for longevity the extra 4GB of VRAM for the R9 390 makes it the better choice.

The R9 390 and GTX 970 are pretty much neck and neck at 1080p, while the R9 390 pulls away in performance when you move up to 1440p resolution.
