Hi guys :) .. well, big thunderstorm fried my PC :( ... trying to salvage as many parts as I can but I think I'm going to have to start by replacing the motherboard and CPU (tried replacing the hard drive but still having issues) ... I'm assuming the PC motherboard and/or CPU is fried because graphics card is dead and even after swapping hard drive with a hard drive that worked before Windows 8.1 just won't cooperate (keeps cycling to the light blue "there's a problem with your PC" , " Recovery -your PC needs to be repaired" et cetera screen).

I'd prefer to keep my dd3 memory (16 GB) to save money... and I'm hoping for a CPU in the range of $100 that can be paired with a motherboard that will accept DD3 memory , hopefully the CPU will be at least as powerful as my FX 6350 (as powerful or more so than FX8350 would be great :) )

I'm also hoping to have a motherboard priced around $100 or so that can handle decent graphics cards in the future (ones in the range of 4 GB video memory or higher).. actually if anyone can recommend a decent graphics card for budget gaming around $150 that would be great too :) (I've been told a graphics card that accepts a 6 or 8 pin power supply is best and I have a 650 watt power supply that should handle it ... hopefully my power supply isn't fried ! )

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds :)

are you sure that your PSU is ok.

Normally it will be the first thing that dies if there is a lightning strike.

Look for something like an i5-3470 paired with an 1155 mobo.
Asus P8Z77-M Pro

As far as graphics goes your budget is around the 1050Ti mark

Thank you for your reply Asoroka I appreciate it :) ... you know, that occurred to me a few hours after I started this thread - that I really should try replacing the power supply in case that solves the problem. I have a spare power supply I can plug in to see if that makes the PC behave itself again.

In the event that does not do the trick however... I did a google search, can't find the i5-3470 for anything less than $160 :( .. I'd hate to get the FX 8350 CPU given the amount of " don't buy that" comments I see on tom's hardware when I google it but given that it's $100, which is within my price range for CPU's :( ...

ASUS P8Z77-M PRO is showing out of stock at newegg and can't find it at amazon :( .. doing my best to avoid buying from ebay given that can be hit or miss depending on the seller (though I am aware of ebay's customer satisfaction policy - but I've had better luck with amazon and newegg :) )

Anyone have any suggestions as far as a particular decent 1050Ti card around $150? Preferably with a 6 or 8 pin power connector ? (I had a moderator tell me in the graphics card part of the forum that I need to avoid graphics cards that do not rely on external power if I'm looking to game in the future... I have an eye towards being able to play games like the Witcher 3, Batman Arkham Knight, Deus Ex Mankind Dividded, Human Revolution, Rise of the Tomb Raider, those sorts of games... say at 1920 by 1080 ) ...

Well further edit and update, swapping out the power supply did not work.. on top of that like a fool I selected the "fail safe configuration default" option or something to that effect on the motherboard and now the darn thing won't even display a picture or boot into BIOS even when I hit the delete key (though I think the darn motherboard was dying anyways, even when the power supply was swapped I smelled something burning briefly from inside the computer... not a good sign...

Anyways.. at this point I'm considering an FX 8350 processor since that falls in my budget range of $100, M5A78L-M/USB3 motherboard (stuck with micro ATX motherboards since I have a case that only supports that size) which will run about $73 purchased from amazon... thoughts? And any suggestions as to a good video card in the $150 range for that?

The 1050Ti does not need extra power as the PCIe bus can supply the required 75W.

Get the 4GB version rather than 2GB.

I sell my stuff on ebay and offer money back warranty.
So just check the sellers return policy and feedback rating, don't dismiss it out of hand.

You should be able to get an i5-3450 for you budget and a motherboard GA-Z77P-D3 on amazon

Thanks again Asoroka I really appreciate you taking the time to read my posts and answer them :)

I think it's awesome you're good to your customers that way on ebay that's very kind of you :) ... but my purchases on ebay have been.. well, hit and miss despite good feedback from customers and the seller's return policy... the seller could easily claim that I didn't know what I was doing and destroyed the stuff while installing it, or that the products worked when the seller shipped it (maybe it did for all I know! Maybe the products were delivered by a 300 pound gorilla who took it's frustration out on the package :p ) .... I did look up the parts you mentioned on amazon and while I could buy them from 3rd party sellers, would prefer to order directly from amazon itself if possible given their generous return policy.... though I totally get what you're saying, for the money I could do better :)

And yep, definitely going with the 4 GB version of that video card :) .. just wish they made it with a 6 or 8 pin power connector instead of solely drawing power from PCI slot it would make me rest a lot easier :( ... on the one hand eager to try the games I mentioned earlier (bright side of darn lighting strike toasting my PC I suppose :) ) ... but on the other hand worried about what happens if the darn video card decides to draw extra power beyond it's 75 watt consumption rate and dies in the process since it can't get all it needs (maybe?) from the PCI slot (going off bitter reviews by various customers on newegg here.. on the other hand websites like PCMag rave about it and lots of positive reviews too by customers)...

Also forgot to mention the video card I'm looking at :).. it's the EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti SC GAMING, 4GB GDDR5, DX12 OSD Support (PXOC) Graphics Card 04G-P4-6253-KR .. not sure if this amazon link will work but here goes :)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MF7EQJZ/?coliid=I3TY0AJ2FP51FF&colid=LRYM2128IT1F&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

$189, which is above my $150 I'd prefer to spend but it got good reviews from PCMag and other various professional-type (guessing... hoping... they're professional? :) ) online

Thanks man :) .. I did see the tomshardware reviews of the cards when I was researching them :) .. it's just that a moderator on here warned against cards that don't have a 6 or 8 pin power connector on them :( .. but...cross my fingers and see what happens? :)
