Hello,

I am looking at upgrading from my A10-6700, which is bottlenecking my GTX 960. After doing some research, I've been looking at moving to the i3 6100. However, I just wanted to confirm that there isn't any other possibility that I am neglecting.

Thanks.

Is $300 after selling your current cpu + mobo? If not you can add some extra cash after selling those.

Get an B150 motherboard if you can. Has better connectivity option.

Consider this -
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($204.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B150M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($57.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($52.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $315.96
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

In the 200 dollar to 300 dollar range, you could get a high end CPU like a 6600k and a cheap motherboard, or you could get around a 200 dollar CPU with a better motherboard.

My suggestion is an i5 4460, paired with a motherboard around 100 dollars. That way you won't have to get new RAM.
