What's the best $300 cpu for encoding?

Would I be better off going with a 4790K clocked at 4 - 4.4GHZ (I have no intention of overclocking) for $299

Or

Would I be better off buying an e3 1231V3?

Its going to be used for photoshop, video rendering, and editing in general...

Also, would an r9 280 be sufficient for that?
Thanks
Chao

Or a better question.

Is the xeon 1231, paired with the GA-H97-D3H compatible... And if so, do you think that will be sufficient for doing what I need to do?

Really the big advantage of the i7 is the overclocking, without it it really isn't...
The i7-4790K is stronger than the Xeon E3-1231 V3 simply because its higher clocks, but the Xeon is cheaper and the performance difference is marginal.

Any compatible motherboard is OK, H97 have better value. If you're in a budget, get the Xeon, a cheap H97 motherboard and the GPU you want.

Alright, so the difference is small.

$50 of 300 is about %16. I can afford an 7, but is it worth it is what I am asking.

In otherwords, is the i7 16% faster? If its like a 1% difference then of course I'll just save myself half a Benjamin.

Also, ^ you've got the CPUs expert badge, you, as far as i'm concerned have got the authority over this. 😀

Really the big advantage of the i7 is the overclocking, without it it really isn't going to be much faster at all, I would say the xeon would be better for you.
