Hello all, I have around $800 to spend on a custom-built PC for Battlefield 3. I came up with this build:

GPU: http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-EAH6950-DCII-2DI4S-1GD5/dp/B004SUO55Y
CPU: http://www.amazon.com/AMD-HDZ955FBGMBOX-Phenom-3-2GHz-Retail/dp/B002TQYUAE
RAM: http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-Modules-KHX1600C9D3K2-8GX/dp/B0037TO5C0/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1312174274&sr=1-5
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371044
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131767
Plus a copy of Windows 7 ($100)

Are there any improvements that you can suggest? Will this (theoretically) be able to run Battlefield 3 on high settings?

Thanks!

Your build is a very good one.
I'd not mind the X4 955BE. A 970 falls in the same category as an i3 2100 in gaming so overclocking the 955BE will make it as powerful as a Core2Quad Q9650 or a i3 2100 in gaming. Plus, it'll beat the i3 easily in multitasking. You can play battlefield 3 at 1920x1080 with that build.
The HD 6950 is a beast! :D
The RAM you've chosen is a very good one. So is the PSU. (Antec makes quality PSUs)
The motherboard you've chosen has AM3+ socket, so you can upgrade to Bulldozer in future.

I've rarely seen people who are seeking for help posting a perfect build him/her self.

Good luck with your new PC. You just could consider a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler. With that you can overclock the processor even more.

I'll stay with the 6950, because by the time that the new ones release I'll just upgrade. And I may bulldozer in the future. Good to have flexibility.

Thank you!

two more questions:

I could afford a $200 AMD processor if need be, but I didn't think that it was necessary. Any suggestions on an AMD processor under $200, or is the overclocked 955 good enough?

Just to clarify, I can probably run BF3 on higher settings on that resolution? Or just lower? Because if it's on medium or below I might as well just stick with the Xbox 360 version.

Wait till next month to purchase your build, you can get the godly AMD Bulldozer Quad core (around $200) and most likely you will find much better deals on things come around that time.

Still leaves you with 1 month before BF3 releases so you can have some time to get to know your setup.

I purchased my 965BE back in 2009, its time to move onto greater things since I am playing BF3 the second coming of the greatest game ever made :p (BF2 being the first)

So either, spend $100 now and get the 955BE and overclock it a good bit then wait till you can afford the BD cpu. Or just wait and save yourself some heartburn since it releases in a few weeks :p

I didn't plan on purchasing until late September anyway, so thanks for the advice!

And I know I'm paranoid, but the new Bulldoser plus the OC 6950 would run it on higher settings, correct? :p

The 955BE is not that costly. And I'm hearing bulldozer rumours since a long time and still they haven't hit the markets. So if I were you, I'd buy a 955BE and overclock it hard! You can replace only the CPU if you ever feel the need of a more powerful one.

Its like saying "Thanksgiving isn't that bad, I have been hearing christmas rumours since a long time ago and still it hasn't come so if I were you I would just celebrate Jesus's birthday on thanskgiving and party hard!"

:p

Yeah, I looked and didn't find anything.

Hey Qwerty,
Yeah the 955 overclocked and the single 6950 will max this game out at 1920by1080 resolution.
I am running that set up now, and the only game that gives it a rough time is 2033.

No it most certainly will not! At E3, they said the demo's were running with an i7 and GTX 580, and even then they weren't maxing the settings at 1920x1080!

While a 6950 will no doubt run the game quite well, it will not be maxing BF3 at 1080p.

Link?

It said it would be a tiny bit more demanding than BFBC2.

Hey Striker,

I disagree, yeah they might have been using that hardware to run the game at E3, but we both know that the 6950 will run the game maxed out with FPS never dipping below 40.

Yeah if you want to get 85 frames per second you certainly can using more hardware. The human eye only sees what 40ish FPS so I'm fine staying above that.

With that said I will be picking up a 2nd 6950 soon, but probably total overkill.

Well, it's all a matter of opinion.

For one thing, the 6950 will NOT be running BF3 maxed (read: all settings at max) at 40FPS. Not a chance.
Second, I know nothing, seeing as no official benchmarks have come out. All we have are the statements made by Dice.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-580-review/11 The GTX 580 gets 65FPS in BC2 maxed @ 1920x1200. Dice says they ran the demo's with a GTX 580, and it could not max the game and maintain 60FPS. That means there is a BIG difference between the games.

And lastly, I don't think 2 6950's will be overkill for BF3 at all. I think that with 2 in CFX you'll probably be hitting 80FPS maxed, but that's certainly not overkill.

Ok everyone... I am 100% sure that DICE has said that if you can run BC2 you can run BF3. It will be more demanding, yes, but what they were testing it on was an Alpha build.

So, that being said, I probably can't max BF3 with an $800 build. But in games like Metro 2033 (best reference point at the moment, IMO), can an OC'd 6950 coupled with the bulldozer quad-core theoretically run BF3 at 40+ FPS on higher graphics settings?
