Best affordable not-so-big tablet?

Hi.

I want to buy a new tablet. I own a Asus Google Nexus 7 2013 with 32GB of storage, and it died. I absolutely LOVED this tablet (...while it worked). Now I need a new one, and I'd like one with these features:

1. Not a huge screen. I adored this 7" screen. Anything similar in form factor to the Nexus 7 would be appreciated. Of course, if you consider a slightly bigger tablet to be worth my money, I will definitely check into it.
2. AT LEAST 1080p resolution
3. Fast. I want a fast processor and ram. If there's anything I hate, it's a slow phone or tablet.
4. As affordable as possible. I remember paying approximately $400 for my Nexus 7 2013 on black friday (either $300 or $400). Anything below $500 would be greatly appreciated.
5. No amazing graphics card or processors needed. I want it to be fast, yes, but I won't be gaming on my tablet. I don't need an amazing high end processor.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

I'm a fan of the Sony devices. The Z3 tablet is very nice and 8.3". Their new Z5 smartphone is very nice as well. The Sony's are weatherproof and are very reliable. I can't say the same for other Android devices.

Pricewise the Google Nexus tablets are a good value but Sony's are my favorite. Samsung has been very unreliable for me and I stay away from them.

The Nexus 9 is on the large side, he mentioned he wanted 7".

The Nvidia shield is more of a gaming table which he also mentioned he didn't want.

Aside from the Sony I mentioned there is the Asus Zen 580CA. Nice fully loaded 2k 8" under $400.

You can always try a Samsung. Everyone I know has a Samsung device be it a tablet or phone. I personally prefer Sony for my smartphones.

I know you are asking for a 7" form factor...but i would recommend the Surface 3 base model. It has a 10" screen which is a bit big but I feel like this would serve you the best. But this is all irrelevant if you need android specific apps.

And although Samsung is usually good...lets just say I have smashed a few of them out of pure disgust due to their touch wiz overlay and just the feel.

The surface is a windows tablet. I think he was looking for Android. The surface tablets are nice though

Sony should be coming out with some nice tablet around mid 2016. Google has the new Pixel C that is beautiful. But it's purchase direct from the google store only and it's quite pricey for an Android Tablet.

Right now the Google Pixel C is the best Android tablet on the market. Google tablets are also always first to get Android updates. Mid 2016 we should see the new Samsung and Sony tablets. The Sony one should be the better one, and it's iffy if they'll even release it in North America.
