Hello everybody,

I am currently making an old compatible system in order to run some old and very old games (specially car games). I have also a Microsoft FF USB wheel.
I was looking to have the best system with ISA slot's (for a Sound Blaster 32) and AGP slot, so finally I came up with a Soyo P4I845PEISA with a Pentium 4 3.06 Ghz. I have to say that my system is running Windows 98SE in a FAT partition with dual DOS 6.2 boot.
As a graphic card I have a geforce 4 TI42008x which is running very good and compatible with older and not as older car games, with 53.04 version of forceware driver.
The problem is that I wanted also to run newer games as Toca Race Driver 2, Colin McRae 4, etc.. then I searched for a more powerful AGP card. I bought a Geforce 6800GT and then arrive the disaster because any driver from version 61.76 to 81.98 worked fine with all games as the Geforce 4 did (versions 53.04 and 56.64 are not compatible with 6800GT)
So now I am going to abandone the Geforce 6800GT because I am unable to make it compatible with Windows 98, I think the quality of the drivers should be very bad because there were done at the end of Windows 98 support.

So my question is if somebody knows any thick to make working the 6800GT with W98 or if a FX5950 ultra or FX5900 could work fine in my system (which are compatible with versions 53.04 and 56.64 of forceware drivers)

The games I play and I am having most problems are:

Need for Speed III Hot Pursuit
Need for Speed IV High Stakes
Need for Spped Porsche 2000
Toca Touring Car 2
Formula I racing simulation
Monaco Grand Prix Racing simulation
Colin McRae Rally (1st version)
Colin McRae Rally 2

Any advice will be welcomed.

Thanks.

There is no point to use XP in this system, a lot of old games are not compatible. Even the Microsoft wheel is not fully compatible, it is incredible how Microsoft abandon his own devices not to giving support 2 years after his launch.

I would like to know if a Nvidia FX5950 ultra will be compatible with Windows 98 and old games, I think this is the only option I have to increase the performance of my W98 system due the drivers for 6800GT are very inestable.
Perhaps some ATI model has good drivers for W98 but I don't have too many references.

I have a Geforce FX 5900 in a P4 system, dual booting both Windows 98 and Windows xp. Drivers are available for both operating systems. I picked up the card at a computer recycling center for $20. I've had some minor problems getting MSDOS games to run, but none of these problems seem to be video related. SVGA, VGA, even CGA graphics work fine, as do 3D games like Morrowind, and Roller Coaster Tycoon. It also supports resolutions up to 1920X1080, which is nice.
So yeah. Any high end card from the 5000 series is probably your best bet. I think the comparable generation for ATI cards would be the X800 series, but I'm not sure.
