Hi Guys,

I initially planned to build a Gaming PC with i5 6500 and did save for it. I was able to afford rx470 with this build so I ordered it right away. However after I ordered 470 my budget unexpectedly dropped significantly. Now I can only afford a processor. I currently have 2 old am3 socket motherboards(Gigabyte M68MT S2 and Asrock 960GS), 6 gigs ddr3 ram along with ancient triple core 425 CPU and Athlon 64 5200+. So now I am looking for a processor to complete the build.
I can go for am3+ CPUs as well, but under 95watts. FX 6300 is not worth the price I am paying here. BTW live in India and prices of FX have shot up for no reason and 6300 costs almost $200 here. Any other old phenoms will do. I can get a few used chips on ebay. Can anyone suggest me a good alternative to FX on this platform?
I am a sucker for good graphics, and I can tolerate a little choppyness but not below 30 FPS. Now I did my own research earlier while choosing i5 but I dont know about the processors AMD side. been out of this for a long time.

Thank You.

Depends on the game. In those that are well-threaded, the x6 will have a lot more life and longevity from its extra cores. In those that are not well-threaded, such as DayZ, Arma, Guild Wars 2, and many others, either will perform about the same and will already struggle a bit.

I would probably get the x6. When it comes time to upgrade, you can probably still fetch a fair price for it, selling it used.

Thanks n0ns3ns3, but I will only go for used products that too if it is good deal. I have started saving and will eventually get a good CPU but it could take a while. I cant wait till then. My current CPUs are a bottleneck even for my old HD 6670 and there is no way they can handle a 470.

It's hard to know what to get, given that prices and availability will be so wildly different where you live, so I can only speak in generalities.

Some games are getting CPU intensive to the point that they just don't run well at all on a Phenom II. A Core i3 6xxx will outperform any FX CPU in games, even an 8-core, and would be a great budget option, but if that's still out of your reach, and you already have an AM3+ motherboard, a Phenom II is basically your only choice. Here in the states, these CPUs cost about $40 and perform about what they cost.

Thank you Ecky. One more question. I have an option for x6(1090T) and x4(b60). x6 will cost me twice as x4 but still under my budget. I dont know how much of a difference it makes. Is the performance worth twice the price or shall I just stick to x4. I know I am pretty much screwed here, but I want to squeeze out as much as I can from my old Mbs before I trash them. And yeah, they have to last till I am able to get a new one. That could be at-least a year.
I got a few benchmarks, but they are pretty outdated. Don't know how they perform now.
