Currently I have a AMD FX-4300. I know Intel outperforms most AMD processors but from what I'm aware of Intel processors would not be compatible on my AM3+ socket. The motherboard I have is MSI 760GMA-P34(FX). Also my PSU is 500w

To my knowledge, your board does not support 125w CPUs, so you're limited to something like an FX-6300 or FX-8320e, which is a lower power and lower performance version of the 8320. These will be nice improvements over what you have, but are in many cases still slower in games than even some of the slowest Intel CPUs you can buy today.

If you decide to change platforms, AMD's new AM4 is a good choice, as is Intel's socket 1151. Something like the Ryzen 1400 would be 2-3x faster than your FX. Intel's $60 Pentium G4560 is also a nice CPU.

So it sounds like the solution would be to get a new motherboard that supports a different kind of CPU. What motherboard do you recommend for this? And what would be a good Intel CPU to upgrade to. Nothing too expensive

On a budget, the Intel Pentium G4560 paired with a B250 motherboard would be a good choice. This is the cheapest upgrade, but also the smallest one. The next step up is an AMD B350 or A320 board with a Ryzen 1400 - B350 adds cost, but also allows overclocking. The next up would be a Ryzen 1600 with either A320 or B350. Next would be an Intel i7 with B250, and best of all is an i7-K with Z270.

Be aware that any new CPU will use DDR4 instead of DDR3 RAM, so you're not too far from a complete rebuild.
