Hello, I'm currently running an apu along with my r9 270x. I'm experiencing some terrible fps since the apu is pretty bad. Even clocked at 4.4 ghz. Anyways. With Xmas coming up. I'm looking to get an r9 390. But I need to know what CPU to get. First off, I know Intel would be better here. I have an Asus a88x-pro MOBO and I don't really want to go through the hassle of rewiring everything etc. I want to know if i should get an Fx 8350 then get the appropriate fans (no water cooling) in order to over clock it. As well I need a new psu for this. Please feel free to tell me what I can buy with 400$ in order to make the r9 390 work. Thanks

Solution

Well what would you recommend I do with that 400. I guess I could man up and change mobos and PSU and cpu

you're sorta screwed. fm2+ motherboards won't work with FX cpus.

with $400 as your budget, here is how i would do it.

If you want an FX -

Hmm tight. Is there anything to eliminate to stay closer to 300 or even 350

It depends if you want to get new memory too. If so I would do this and get memory upgrades out of the way for the next 5 years:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($174.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($70.98 @ OutletPC)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: XFX TS 750W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply ($62.40 @ Amazon)

Otherwise if you can keep your memory and go Xeon:

Motherboard: ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($70.98 @ OutletPC)

Or you can even do Skylake:

I have ddr3 16 GB already 😀

Well, as you can see there are a lot of different ways you can take this. Pure gaming I would go with a 4690k build like suggested above, if you OC that to 4.5Ghz it's the clear winner. With DX12 the Xeon could become the better option depending on how new games use hyperthreading. Skylake would be nice just to lock in the newest socket and memory platform. Cheapest would be 4460+H97.

Overall you really can't make a bad decision among all of these. You will be happy with any of them.

Doesn't the Xeon perform nearly as well as most i7s?

so 500w is good enough for the intel build? along with 16 gb ddr3 ram @ approx 1800? AND with r9 390?

can 500w handle this instead? i already own 500w s taking off 60$ would be amazing.

aight.. ONE final question. im going to somehow sell my current mobo and apu then keep my ddr3 ram. keep my case. keep my fans and everything. Going to buy a xeon and buy a new mobo. Basically what im asking is. what mobo will work with xeon, corsair vengeance ddr3 ram, R9 270x---> later upgrade to r9 390.i want to sell my cpu, mobo and psu, if i can (any suggestions how would be great). I dont want to be buying an entire system. Therefore, what Mobo, and psu would work well, and would be upgradable later without having to switch my mobo. Any help would be great. for now, my budget is 400$ just for psu cpu and mobo. Go crazy, not sold et on the xeon, just heard its like an i7. ALSO AS COOL AS POSSIBLE PLEASE.
