Best [and cheap] combo for playing/editing 1080p videos

I recently got a Gopro Hero 3 camera and I'd like to play/edit short videos (some longboarding and playing with my little daughter, for example).

Our old desktop won't even play most 1080p videos. I'v already tried KMPlayer, VLC and MPC-HC. It shutters and get out of sync. 😴
It's a Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 + Athlon 64 X2 4000 + 2GB DDR3 800 combo. No offboard video card.

Will you please help me suggesting a [cheap] combo that could do that?!

depends how seriously you're taking the editing side. Minimum I would suggest is an i5, H77 mobo and 8GB RAM

Not seriously. I mean, I only need to cut, paste and insert audio, for example. Short videos. Not PRO editing.

I'm not even sure if editing was the right word. I guess some mild setups can edit gopro videos, right?

You can get Sony movie studio platinum 12 (formerly Vegas) for about $50.

That can accelerate editing and conversion via intel quicksync, which is available on integrated graphics on intel processors. With that in mind, you could run something like an i3 on a cheap motherboard and still get excellent conversion and playback.

"cheap" is always relative and HD video and even simple edits can only get so cheap.

i would say bump the ram to 6gb just in case
