We'd have a better topic here.. if the question was..
"what the worst, most expensive, POS on the market that I don't want to buy?"

People would have a field day with that one.

I have been using AVAST for close to two years and have seen it stop virii in their tracks. It also will perform a boot scan of your system before windows loads to get those really nasty lil buggers. It's free. I've also seen it update itself several times a day. It seems to be easy on the resources. It detects virii on web pages.

I tried most of the free ones and settled on this one as the one for me...once installed it is painless. Just remember, none of them will work if you don't use them, and that includes a system scan regularly.

Sorry for getting sidetracked. I've been using McAfee and it's very good but my subscription ended so I can't update it anymore. That's why I was asking for the best free antivirus because an antivirus is only as good as it last update.

Anyway here's the link to Avast:

I have been impressed with Panda software and intend on ordering a copy of their Panda Titanium Antivirus 2005. Cost some dough though but I do not mind spending money on good software.

If I was gonna spend $40-50 on an AV ... I'd buy Kaspersky Antivirus - they seem to consistently score best in comparatives ... but I'm cheap, so I use Avast! AV, Zone Alarm (gonna change that) and a router firewall ...

I'm not sure yet ... but lately ZA has caused way to many problems (hangs, freezes, etc). Maybe Kerio or Sygate ...

Zone Alarm completley crashed my XP machine beyond repair. All I did was install the software and reboot. As soon as the Windows logon displayed. I would blue screen. The people creating Zone Alarm have really let their software slide. Terrible coding if you ask me. I will never use Zone Alarm again. I liked Sygate's firewall. Never had a single problem with it. Panda's firewall/anti-virus has been working great also.

I've been using ZA Pro updated to 5.5.94.0 and have had no problems with my XP machine ever. I have the MS firewall disabled and I've been using AVAST AV for close to two years. Between those two, Spybot, and AdAware my machine stays clean.

If I was doing a fresh reinstall today, I'd use BitDefender AV (Free v8), Sygate Firewall (free), Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster & Spyware Guard, Ad-Aware SE and Microsoft Antispyware - all free. Free is good price for me.

Well, if you didn't subscribe to porn emails, download illegals apps, read solicited emails, and stayed off porn sites.. chances are you wouldn't even need an antivirus..

I got my first virus 2 days ago. I was in Indianapolis and my roommate decided he was going to use Limewire to download some porn.. but right before he did that he logged into a share on my computer, downloaded something that was a virus, which made my computer fire up limewire and start downloading the virus. Now, it didn't effect anything, but it kept popping up limewire and created multiple download instances.. which effectivly was bogged down my internet connection and beating the crap out of limewire.. its all over limewire.

Other than that, I can say that I've never had a virus in over 8 years.

Before that I had one when my brother used my PC, when I lived at home, to look up some porn.

I've used the following ...

- AVG (like it)

- Avast! (used it on an old computer - PII 450mhz - really too much software for the computer ... bogged it down - if used on a newer system, might be pretty good but speed on this old dude was slow and boggy)

- F-Prot (it's ok)

- Kaspersky (it's ok ... seems like it takes too much processing power)

- Used McAfee & Norton previously ... they're ok.

If I recall correctly, Panda actually uses Sygate's firewall. I'll have to double-check... but I could swear I saw the Sygate name in there somewhere... I believe they license it from Sygate.

I've used Norton Antivirus in the past, but not anymore. There are far better alternatives.

In my opinion the most reliable pair now,after I've tested a few is:<b>Antivirus</b>:1.<A HREF="http://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/desktop/pc-cillin/evaluate/overview.htm" target="_new"><font color=red><b>Pc-cillin 2005</b></font color=red></A>
I use it without its integrated firewall,as firewall I prefer <A HREF="http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_zap.jsp" target="_new"><b><font color=blue>ZoneAlarm Pro5.5</font color=blue></b></A>

Another very good alternative for those who want a very fast scanning rate is: <A HREF="http://www.eset.com/products/nt.htm" target="_new"><b><font color=blue>Nod32 2.5 Antivirus</font color=blue></b></A>, nod32 has also high detection rate, the lowest memory used & system resources occupattion.
Together with <A HREF="http://agnitum.com/products/outpost/newcontrols.html" target="_new"><b><font color=blue>Outpost Firewall Pro 2.7</font color=blue></b></A> is a good choice.

And at last, but not at least <A HREF="http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-45-en--BitDefender-8-Professional-Plus.html#" target="_new"><font color=red><b>BitDefender 8 Pro Plus</b></font color=red></A>
BitDefender 8 has a good firewall, <A HREF="http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/" target="_new"><font color=green><i> here is a 2005 review</i></font color=green></A>

These combinations are in my opinion the best available right now, on the market.I say that after I tested Norton Antivirus 2005,AVG pro,McAfee,Avaast,Panda.

Other good firewalls are :
Sygate Personal Firewall Pro 5.5
Kerio Firewall
