Best ATI 46** choice for me

Hi everbody

I am thinking of fitting either the Ati Radeon HD4650 with 1GB or Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4670 512MB. The HD4670 is only slightly more expensive for the power. Gathered from the site they are the lowest power cards and don’t require extra power cable.

My computer is rather old - would I have power or over heating issues with either card or does that depend on the exact card?

Intel Pentium 4 650
Current card is Geforce 6200
2GB memory
2 harddisks each 200gb
300 CPU
19” LCD

(Just cleaned the fats ands fitted 1GB!)

I would go with the 4670 but either card is a massive improvement on a geforce 6200. with that said the p4 will be a bottleneck on preformance and need info on what psu you have to answer power question, heat should not be an issue

I assume it is a 300 PSU? If so will I have any power problems?

I am running a HD4650 on a 300 watt generic power supply and so far no problems. However, I would recommend the 4670 instead of the 4650 since the 4670 has GDDR3 memory instead of GDDR2. This gives it twice the bandwidth and you can probably overclock it better too. The 4670 uses only slightly more power than the 4650. I bought the 4650 because it was cheaper than the 4670, but a couple of weeks later the 4670 went on sale for the price I paid for the 4650. Oh well.

By the way, Galaxy is selling a low power 9600GT which supposedly does not require a power connector either. I have no experience with this, but the performance is somewhat better than 4670. Make sure you get the low power version, because there are many varieties of this card.
