Hi. I've got some HUGE .avi files that I'd like to convert to .wmf for
use on Windows-only CDs. What's the best program for converting .avi
files to (hopefully much smaller) .wmf files? I'd love to go with
shareware, especially if I can download a full-featured but time-dated
evaluation version. Thanks for your help... Bruce

Huh? WMF is a still picture format. You want to convert all the
frames in your "HUGE .avi files" to thousands of WMF files?

Or do you mean WMV (Windows Media Video)? The Microsoft
WMV encoder is free...

Yes, but if it's because of the size, then better encode to XviD
-which keeps them as Avis, and not that hellish Wmv format.

WMV is quite good in my experience (and that of many others).
What causes you characterize it as "hellish"?

Sorry for the confusion -- .wmv is what I meant to say. And thanks for
the link to Microsoft's Windows Media Encoder 9. It looks like exactly
what I need short term. In fact, I'm downloading it right now... Bruce

Can XviD's avis be read by Windows Media Player as readily as WMV? How
much smaller at XviD files? Thanks... Bruce

I'm interested to hear you've had good experience with .WMV. Do you
think it is an appropriate choice for dishing video clips (1) on
Windows-only CD-ROMs, and (2) over the Web on sites where 98 percent
of the traffic is Windows 98 and higher? Thanks for your thoughts...

Yes. I use WMV written on CD-R (or even DVD-ROM for large
files) for distribution all the time. Quite nice.

Yes again. For example....
http://www.professionallyspeaking.org/archive.html

I put up WMV files in relative high quality for those with
broadband connections.

OTOH, I went too far in trying to compress the audio (WMA)
files as you can hear. I need to bump the quality up a notch or
two (at the expense of larger files).
