Hey all

I have been out of the latest technology loop for awhile now...but it is about that time again. I'm looking to build a new rig and would like to get people's advice. I'm basically looking to build an inexpensive computer, but I want the most bang for the buck.

So as for as CPU goes, I'm thinking a Core2Duo (not sure which one, there is a dizzying amount of them) and the LGA775 platform I suppose...

Now I have a few questions:

-Should I consider AMD? If so, which models?
-What is the fastest memory technology out now, and...what is the best option if i'm going for cheap performance?

any help would be appreciated

Thanks

-Tim

DUAL core AMD, as close to 3ghz and a motherboard that will except quads. Buy a cheap/fast dual core with DDR2 now, and you can just upgrade to a quad once AMD gets decent ones out there... that's my plan anyways... :p
please don't flame

depand on your Budget milord !

CHEAP

INTEL : E5200+P5Q with a decent cooling can reach 3.6-3.8 ghz without that much Vcore. This way you can spend more money on GPU.

AMD : doormatderek is right. go for a cheap Dual and OC to near 3.0. this one more time let you more money to put on GPU.

Best choice.

INTEL : E8400+P5Q with good cooling and your good to reach over 4.0ghz ! paired with an HD4870 or better your damn good to go !

AMD : Phenom II X4 940 one more time with decent cooling. same plan for this one about the gpu ....

MONEY NEEDED.

I7, nice cooling, GTX285 ! (SLI is better ;) )

Q9650 or Q9550, nice cooling, GTX285 (SLI is better ;) )

Intel:

Either an Intel E5200 with a decent board or an Intel E8000 series. The Q8200 seems like a good choice too, and if you have a high FSB board, it should easily get to well over 3 GHz.

AMD:

The Phenom II x3 720 seems to be the way to go here for cheap. If you can afford the extra, the Phenom II 920 is also a great choice.

Well for a decent and inexpensive build I would recommend AMD and I would start with this board that's good, cheap, and ready for AM3 140W CPUs

ASRock A780FullHD $56.99

Then go with something like a 7750 BE, 4GB of DDR2 800, Decent quality 450-600W PSU, a Radeon 4850/4830 and you can build a pretty decent system with an HD, Case, and DVD burner for around $400. Of course you also need to worry about an OS, keyboard, mouse, and whatnot. Anyway I think you should start off there and put in better components as your budget will allow.
