I'm new to this so please be patient........
Just upgraded to XP3000 and removed the stock
HSF and upgraded my case to get more
fans ( 5 x 80 mm ) to improve airflow/cooling.
I have the following:

A7N8X - Bios 1002
XP3000+
SLK-800 HSF
1.5GB PC2700 CAS 2.5
MSI TI 200

I have not touched the voltages yet, only slightly raised the multiplier and using Prime95 to stress test after.

Have 13.5 x 166 = 2250

Modest but have to start somewhere......

😱 I wouldn't ask the question if I knew the answer!!]

now running at 14 * 166 = 2332

ran Prime95 for 3 hours no errors or warnings, couldn't
run it at all before. The extra cooling really helped, thanks to umheint0 for suggesting it.

max mobo temp during run 23 C
max cpu temp during run 42 C dropped to 35 C
after run

Being a newbie I forgot to turn off all programs during
the stress test (norton antivirus).

I had increased Vcore to 1.7 but probably did not have to
do this but I am going to start raising the FSB and will
post when I have some more results.

you should do the wire trick and lower your multiplier and raise your fsb, this will /should let you see higher gains in benchmarks and games.
try to see if you can get the 166 above 170.
i dont have one yet, so i cant say,i know some guys have chips running crazy fsb's

bcrann doesn't need to do any trick, because he can increase the FSB easily, very probably up to 180 with no problems, or even higher if the PCB revision of the A7N8X has the PCB rev. 2.0.
If the PCB is REV. 1.04 or 1.06, probably the best solution is to increase the clock by 0.5 and the FSB by 10÷12 MHz (178 MHz). In case of PCB rev. 1.04 or 1.06 I don't believe that raising with FSB over 180 MHz will assure a stable running. Moreover bcrann uses three memory DIMM. To obtain the highest FSB with stability, it needs to use only two DIMMs

The A7N8X is PCB 1.04 and I was tring the

Multiplier at 14
FSB at 176
Vcore at 1.7

No problem with heat, got to about 45 C on the CPU
got to about 23 on the mobo

but Prime95 would benchmark but fail the Stress Test.

When you say to only use 2 dimms do you mean use 2 in

slot 1 and 2
or
slot 2 and 3

Just can't seem to get it past 14x166.
I've tried using only 2 dimms in various slots.

If I try 15x166 the pc will not boot, goes to a black
screen and I have to power down to get the pc back.

I've tried various combinations of raising VCore and
FSB with little success. (BSOD or Prime95 failing).

Could my memory (PC2700 CAS 2.5 (DDR333)) be causing
some of my grief?

Could my low end video (MSI TI 200) card be part of the
problem?

Could be I just have a dud of a cpu..........

I think I'll just live with this for a while
until I have some money and I'll upgrade my
video card and or memory and try again.

Well at 166MHz memory speed your memory shouldn't be the problem and neither should your videocard be causing it.

How many watt is your PSU as it might be that your system is running out of power when OC'ed to high.

My CPU fan spins so fast that it creates a wormhole 😱

Enermax 350 PSU should supply enough power?

1.75 was max Vcore I tried

Flash the new BIOS 1004 which enable the FSB to go up to 200 MHz even on 1.04 PCB rev. This bios will allow you to add at least other 10 MHz to your higher and stable FSB reached with 1002 bios.

OK, I had the the same problems with enermax 365 W. I changed to ENERMAX 465 W and the problems went away.
How do you set the BIOS ? It needs to be all "user defined" you "MUST" be able to increase just of 0.5 the multiplier. It represents about 100 MHz and it MUST be allowed. Consider that normally an increase of core clock of about 15% should be easily possible.

Well to reach 2.3 GHz (14x166) you might need to try 1.8V... here are the results people had (only 2) with the XP3000+:

Speed Volts Code Motherboard Heatsink/Cooling Notes ID
2877 1.90 ANDC A7N8X deluxe Thermaltake volcano 11 (adjusted my own lil way) 18639
2443 1.85 ANDC A7N8x Volcano 11 18764

first off have you updated the chip set drivers? all to often this goes over looked, and is just as important as the bios. the new Nvidia chip drivers (2.41) at the Nvida web site are approved by Asus, as I spoke with Bobby at Asus tech support today. Major changes here. (esp. for win2k/xp pro users)

secondly, what brand of memory are you using? with rev. 2. the a7n8x will run 3 sticks in dd/ddr. i'm not sure about previous versions. are you running async or sync mode?

next, what are your temps at the cpu, via bios NOT the asus/windows h.w.m?

cpu fan is running at what rpm?

what power supply are you running? wattage?

if your video card is a newer radeon/nvidia make sure the additional power line is pluged in.

generally, if your temps are below 65c windows will boot fine unless you have a bad stick of ram (make sure ram is fully seated) or another bios setting preventing windows to load (is apic on)?

what percent setting are you using for your memory frequency adjustment in your bios?

have you updated the bios to the latest version?

finally, and i know you many not want to hear this but maybe that cpu is maxed out. as I have no actual experience with the Barton 3.0 I hope this helps.
