The submission period is now over. Please cast your vote here.

We recently updated our rules for Best PC Builds. m-ITX builds no longer require WiFi. Please see below for our full list of rules.

The Best PC Builds. Our title is practically self-explanatory. Unlike the System Builder Marathon, these configurations are not chosen by Tom's Hardware's editors. They are submitted and selected by our forum members based on defined pricing tiers. Every so often, we ask the community for its help picking parts based on performance and features for the price.

It's a new year and while certain parts of the industry could be labeled as stagnant, *cough* CPU architectures *cough*, there has been drastic progress in form factors and distribution. With the introduction of "mini" sized graphics cards such as the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 Mini ITX and the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 Mini, as well as the near standard requisite of space for full sized graphics cards, the mini-ITX form factor is now a viable form factor for any budget. The coming advent of true on-demand streaming from the likes of Nvidia further solidifies the mainstreaming of m-ITX. And so, for the first time ever, mini-ITX and SFX builds may compete in every single budget category. Are you up to the challenge?

The voting period will run until Wednesday, February 22nd, so be sure to vote for your best build by that date. Click on this link to vote for your favorite build in each category.

This thread is for the $1,000 budget category. Please only submit builds within the $1,000 budget category to this thread. All other builds will be disqualified.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Only one build per budget category, per user. Multiple builds from a single user or duplicate accounts will be disqualified.
    ■Do not go over budget.
■Use only Amazon OR Newegg to source parts.
■Use list prices only: coupons, rebates, bundles or any other limited-time offers will not be accepted.
■Do not include shipping or tax in your final budget.
■Do not include the Operating System, Monitor or VR Headset, Keyboard, Mouse or Gamepad.
■Do not put your forum handle in the name of your build, and avoid odd capitalizations & symbols.
Provide links to the Amazon or Newegg product pages of each component — we encourage users to use PCPartPicker's System Build for speedy construction. Do not post a link to your build, but rather please be sure to export as BBCode for a quick copy/paste to the forums.

Quick update from the Tom's Hardware Editor in Chief, Fritz Nelson:

*Cryorig m9i included in the build due to the tendancy of the stock intel cooler to be very noisy - and as value-adding for future upgrade paths for higher TDP CPU.*

For a triple fan GPU and a cpu cooler, a decent case just wouldnt do. so i choose the best case possible and left out the usual ssd,hdd combo(trying to make up for it with a sshd XD) and the z170 mobo. if u can stretch ur budget get the zotac premium 240gb ssd along with ur hdd and go for the z170 mobo for overclocking ;)

NOTES:

1. The concept is to create a versatile and strong performing system suitable for both workstation applications and gaming at reasonable cost. By selecting GPU options, the use can be focused more specifically. Having a 4-core, hyperthreading Xeon E3 at 3.5/3.9GHz and a GTX 1060 3GB (Passmark 3D average of 8431), the system should have very good performance for reliable 2D and 3D CAD design / drafting plus graphic design. The GTX 1060 GPU provides a reasonably high level of gaming performance as well as strong performance in GPU rendering, and video editing / processing.

2. The Intel Xeon E3-1241 v3 4C @ 3.5 /3.9GHz (hyperthreading) CPU has a Passmark average CPU rating of 10034, for comparison, the i5-7600K is rated at 9280. Importantly, the single-thread rating of the Xeon E3-1241 v3 is 2254- higher than any Xeon E5 (E5-1620 v4= 2120) and compare to i5-7600K at 2404. 3D modeling performance should be very good. CPU rendering power, given the 4-cores / 8 threads would be at a modest but reasonable speed.

3. For workstation uses, the system is provided with 16GB of DDR3-1600 RAM- the native speed for the Xeon E3-1241 v3. The memory is dual channel supporting up to 32GB. The initial specification uses 2X 8GB so that an additional 16GB may be added.

4. If the system has a gaming priority, a GTX 1070 8GB (Passmark 3D average of 10963) may be substituted, such as GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1070 GV-N1070G1 8GB ($399.99) which will increase the price by about $200-250 to about $1,200.

5. The disk system is important in both uses and the suggested system includes a fast Samsung 850 Evo 250GB SSD for the operating system, programs/games and a 1TB Western Digital Blue for storage.

Overclockable with a R9 Fury (next best thing to a GTX 1070 without the price tag)
A case was picked with 5 x 120mm fans for great airflow.

My $500 Build - With a GTX1080!
Z270 Kaby Lake, Room to Grow
I built this to show how low an Nvidia GTX1080 machine could go. But with Z270 it is easy to jump up to an i5 and add 8Gb of memory, migrate to a medium sized SSD and rock the gaming world!
