Hello All,
I just bought a BenQ XL2411Z 1080p 144hz monitor. I have a laptop with one HDMI 1.4 port and two Mini DisplayPorts. The BenQ XL2411Z supports dual link DVI-D, VGA, and HDMI 1.4. What is the cheapest cable I could buy to get 144hz 1080p on my monitor? The monitor came with a dual link DVI-D cable so a female connection is fine (male works too as long as the cable is long enough).

Thank you!

HDMi 1.4 can't do 1920x1080@144.

HDMI 1.4a can't do 1920x1080@144. Even though the wiki page says it can do at least 120 Hz, it's not true. It's referring to 3D frame packing, meaning 1920x1080@60 x2.

HDMI 1.4b can do 1920x1080@120

DisplayPort and Dual Link DVI-D should be what to look for, ignore HDMI. It's primarily used for TV and devices connected to them, not PC's.

The short answer is...any HDMI cable is fine. Cables are cables are cables. Get the cheapest one you can find. Whether you're doing 60, 120, or 144 or 240 hz, any cable will handle it. Unless you're super picky about your gear, or are running more than 15 feet of cable, then by all means go for the more expensive active cables (they have a chip in the cable to boost the signal for long distance runs), but a more expensive cable won't always give you better performance. A $10 HDMI cable is just as good as a $50 one. Also, DVI will give you just as good a picture (also runs 144hz). HDMI and DVI are both digital interfaces and will support 1080P, the only difference is that DVI doesn't carry an audio signal. If your monitor doesn't have speakers (I don't think it does), then save some $$ and use the DVI cable.

The problem is I have only DisplayPort and HDMI on my laptop. And either way, I'm going to return this monitor for a slightly more expensive one (BenQ XL2420z) which comes native with a DisplayPort 1.2. Thanks for your replies guys.

Displayport and dual link DVI are both good for 144hz. I prefer Displayport myself, but DVI is also just fine.
