Best card around $200? (MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770?)

Hi,

looking for best performance for around $200, willing to OC if needed.
Im thinking about the HD5770 (what is the nvidia equivalent?)
In particular, the MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770
Does anyone who has a MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770 tell me how it performs?
can it run 2010 games at max settings (res. 1600x1200)?
does it really OC to 20%?
What is the temperature under heavy load?
is there a better, cheaper 5770?
is there a better card then the 5770 for around $200?

To answer your questions:
1. No, there really isn't an nVidia equivalent that I'd truly recommend at this price point. Unless you wanted a $300 GTX 470, then Radeon has the better offerings with DirectX 11 right now, and for less.
2. I honestly think that the R5770 Hawk Edition isn't any thing special. Sorry MSI, and I'm running their card and motherboard right now, but for as much as you pay for it, you give up a display output, and OCing a 5770 doesn't really help that much, or at least in my experience it hasn't.
3. Yes, there are a lot cheaper 5770s, but nothing really better that's cheaper at the same time. I can recommend the HIS IceQ 5770 (more expensive but better) and the HIS H577FK1GD (about the same but cheaper) if you really want a 5770.
4. Yes, there is a better card at $210; the Radeon 5830. The "HIS iCooler V 583FN1GD" to be more exact, it has full 256-bit memory, and is relatively in-between the 5770 and 5850, although it leans towards the 5770 side of things.

An excellent card in my opinion.

^Just to show HIS's excellent reviews on NewEgg. :)

Here's a benchmark of the 5770, 5830, and 5850:

Yes, I'm sure you see the 4890 in there, but I personally would go with the 5xxx series over it, just because of the relative future-proof DirectX 11 support.

From my earlier experiences, HIS has excellent customer support; at least when I needed it with my earlier cards.
There you have it. Good luck with your card shopping. :D

I agree. I just found a bench of the two and stuck it in my earlier post which really shows the difference between the two. I didn't know that about the hawk, either... I thought they just put a souped up cooler on it and called it overclockable. ;) Either way, even if the 5770 could beat the 5830 when it's overclocked, you could always overclock the 5830 and it would be the champion once again.

Seriously? You actually think a card that LOSES in vantage is going to game better?
(ignore the GTX 480, this is only about the 5xxx series.) I'm saying that the difference is exaggerated:

The 5770 should not be used over 1680 resolution as it's terrible memory bandwidth will choke performance above that resolution with lots of AA and AF.
No:

The results generated today seem to disprove the commonly accepted idea that the 5770 is primarily held back by memory bandwidth. In actual fact ATi seems to have equipped the card with enough bandwidth to make it a reasonably balanced part overall.

Notice the 5770 Xfire compared to the 5870:

I've never met so many fanboi's who actually know nothing about the 5830 except what they read online.

First learn about 3Dmark and the 5770 before judging others.

I hate to burst both of your bubbles, but does it even matter if an overclocked 5770 beats a stock 5830? I may just be ignorant, but couldn't you just OC the 5830 too? There's no way whatsoever an overclocked 5770 does better than an equally overclocked 5830. :S
Sometimes I don't understand you people...
I'm not sure who has the right answer on this one, actually. To support psycho, the 5770 and the 5830 shouldn't give 'inaccurate' readings in Vantage due to the fact that they're basically the same, and don't have any major differences other than the memory bandwidth. The architecture of the two are basically comparable. nVidia cards on the other hand have so much crap piled on top of them and their drivers that they're a world apart from the design of Radeon cards. It's like comparing a pickup truck to a minivan. They can both haul stuff and go fast, but the ways in which they do so aren't the same. In support of AMW, though, Vantage is and always will be a Benchmark, and running a controlled benchmark can only cover so many different scenarios that would happen in an actual game. Although they aren't a world apart, not all graphics cards were made to perform in exactly the same way when put under that type of load.
Just trying to stay neutral here. :D

Sorry, my graph was to show the huge disparity between the 5850 and the 5870 and the 5770 and the 5830 that is far more pronounced than the actual gameplay performance, I took that review because of the newer drivers.

I never said the 5830 was a bad card, just that Psycho quote a large performance increase with drivers, and I want to see that with games, not a benchmark. Then he took it personal, which was unintended. :D

Its not that I don't believe it, but the early reviews showed that the lack of extra ROPs didn't equate to much performance, or at least that is how I remember it.

thank you for the many responses,
Im now seriously thinking of shelling out an extra 30 bucks to get the 5830.
Can anyone who has seen both 5770 and 5830 in game tell me if the 30 bucks are woth it?
FPS tests shows a large difference between the 5770 and the 5830.
price is a major concern though, im trying to trim 5 or 10 bucks off everyting when i can.
are the extra $30 justified?

btw, please quote newegg.ca, i need canadian prices, thanks

oh and i will look for rebates and combos or free shipping.

Looks good to me.
The problem I have heard about the 5830 is that it is inadequate for higher resolutions that the 5850 can do, but is overkill for lower resolutions that the 5770 is good for.

HIS is one of the largest distributors of ATI cards, buy with confidence.

That is true, now, but in future titles the extra performance might come in handy, I just wish it had 20-24 ROPs instead of 16.

I don't have a problem with you going with that HIS 5770. Perhaps if you choose to go this route, you could get a second 5770 and crossfire the two, giving you performance upwards of a 5850. It would certainly be more logical than buying a 5770 and then a 5830 a year later. I don't know the PCIe specs of your motherboard, though, so you'll have to tell us if this is a possible alternative. You would need a hefty power supply, though.

Well, good luck with your upgrading. I'd honestly suggest something a little bigger than a 550w, just for a little extra head-room, though, but it's up to you. I'm using an OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w right now, and it's rock solid and relatively cheap. Your call, though... just a suggestion.

As I said, good luck with your PC. :)

Ah, well, I guess it depends on how 'good' the power supply actually is. I'm just saying that if he wants anything over a single card, basically, then he'd need something a little bigger. You're probably right though, since we were looking at a 5830 anyway.

I only paid $150.00 for my MSI 5770 hawk ddr5 last spring new. I wish I could find another new one & would put them in my new computer I am building. However I can't say really how good it can run because the cpu I have it paired with isn't good enough
