Right now the best is the Guillemot Prophet II Ultra 64MB DDR. Of course it's $500, but it's the best.

grab it at www.pricewatch.com....

If you don't wanna spend that much, go for a GeForce 2 GTS based card.

Hello. First off don't buy anything from 3dfx. Thier cards just don't compete. From there i guess it depends on how much money you want to spend. A Geforce2 MX is a good card in the 100$ price range. The gf2 GTS cards perform a lot better but cost twice as much. I recomend the brands ELSA and Hercules (maybe ASUS). Bet the 32mb, not the 64(waste of money). Now if you got too much money laying around get the Geforce2 Ultra, an insane card but it costs $450-$500.
And dont forget the cards from ATI. The 32mb Radeon is not a bad card for $130 and competes well with the MX. THe 64mb radeon costs about as much as a GTS but cant compare in 3d performance. As for my recomendation, get the Radeon All in wonder. It performs adequatly for games and does a ton of other cool stuff. Of course if you just want to play games, dont get this card. But if you want to go on other multimedia ventures get this card. Go to ATI's website to check it out. I got my prices from Pricewatch.com and check out all the articles on graphics cards on Tom's sight
I hope this helps.

Nvidia's Geforce2 cards have the highest farmerates. ATI's Radeon cards have lots of extra's like video in/out, excellent DVD playback, TV tuner, I've even heard they look better. 3Dfx cards are way overpriced. They just aren't as good as the cards from Nvidia and ATI. If you want a pure gaming card get a Geforce2: MX(~$115), GTS(~$185), Pro(~$300), or Ultra(~$440), depending on what you want to spend. If you want a compromise between gaming and cards features, then get a Radeon (~$250 for the Radeon all-in-wonder). The Radeon performs almost as well as the Geforce2 GTS (not as good in low-res 16-bit color, but better in high-res 32-bit color). Check http://www.pricewatch.com for prices.

How big is your monitor? If you're still using a 15" (as I am) then buying a GeForce2/Vodoo5500/Radeon is a waste of money. If you're using a 17" or higher and play games in 1024x768 or higher, definitely the GeForce, although if you play in 32bit color, the Radeon is strong as well.

GeForce2 would be stronger, but GeForce MX is lighter on the budget.
