The xeox is £25 on amazon, last week it was £18

Speedlink XEOX Pro Analog Wireless Gamepad - Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008XPEH9O/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_BfXFvbFQ6J8SB
Its a 360 pad clone & comes with its own wireless receiver.
It has a switch on the back to swap between xinput (360/ms pad) & dxinput (for older titles & emulators).
In xinput mode its seen as an official controller & works flawlessly - games from the last 3 years support it natively.its rechargeable with a built in lithium battery which for me lasts 3-4 days on a charge.
Build quality is not quite as good as a 360 pad but its plenty good enough.
The Xbox One controller has basically seamless configuration although mine always throws an error when connecting it works fine otherwise. The 360 controller requires a (cheap on eBay) dongle to connect. In my experience this is one of the glitchier pieces of hardware I've ever used. I found myself uninstalling/reinstalling it almost every time I wanted to use it. I've yet to try a PS4 controller.

I personally use a wired 360 controller and having had an issue with it. Literally plug and play on Windows 8.1. XBone controllers I haven't tried, but would expect a similar experience.

With a PS4 controller, you'd need to do some driver searching than configuring, but have heard they work well once configured.

If you're on a budget, Logitech makes a really nice playstation layout type controller with the F310 that has full pc support like the 360 controller has.

I bought a game controller when I was in China from a company called Betop that has been really good as well; very similar to the 360 controller but includes auto fire.
