Best core 2 quad for Asus P5W64 WS Pro Mobo

Hi all,

I currently have an Asus P5W64 WS Pro (Wall St Quartet) mobo fitted with an e6600 conroe cpu.

I want to replace it with the best socket 775 cpu that the board can handle, and I want 4 cores.

What is the best option?

Was looking at the QX6800, but I'm not sure.


Can anyone help and suggest a cpu and also what speed increase I can expect ?

its 240 bucks and the best under 250$, but honestly, i dont know why u want to invest in a socket 775 pc,

its up to u, but id recommand the amd upgrade for around the same price as the c2d quadcore chip

Your board will support any Core 2 Quad out. QX6800 too old and is not even close to the best. The QX9770 is the best Core 2 quad , but will run you almost as much as a full I7 system would cost. Your best choice is a Q9650 or 9550 they are the best all around Core 2 quads made, but don't pay more then $200 any more then that and it would be worth building a new rig.

i suggested the 9550, actually, but like i said, its not really worth in my opinion to invest in a 775 socket , unless u can get the q9550 or 9650, at a good price

the difference between both is the level 2 cache, i beleive the 9550 has more level 2 cache per core, :

I notice those are 1333fsb, Would they run ok on my p5w64 mobo as it says that is 1066fsb

This is a false statement the Phenom II 955 is about the same speed if not a little slower then some of the Core 2 quads. If you look at any Core 2 Quad above the Q9550 they will kill the Phenom II so don't believe the AMD fan. I am not saying the Phenom II is a bad processor but saying its much faster is just not true.

He is right though there is absolutely no point in building a new Core 2 system when there are cheaper options that can perform on par with them. Unless you already have this system built and you just want a drop in CPU upgrade go for it, but do not pay more then $200 for the CPU you will be wasting your money if you do. Personally I would not spend more then $180.

See what bios you need before you upgrade the processor it will most likely need to be updated.

I think the above list should be helpful. I do have the latest and I believe last bios upgrade.

ur board only supports 1066 mhz core 2 duos and quacores, so ya id advise this instead,

and ya im not an amd fanboy i got a q6600 as u can see in my info thats running at

2.83 gigahertz ona scythe mugen 2 revb

and btw it all depends in what programs, some favour intel, and some amd

With bios update it works with just about every Core 2 and I am willing to bet even the ones not listed it will work.

To run a Q9550 you need Bios version 0905 stop telling people wrong info so many here have no clue what they are talking about these days.

dude, first chill, and second i looked at the old supported processor, up to 1066 fsb, but yes ur right with bios update u can support 1333 fsb quadcores,

my mistake, most information i provide is good i beleive and it happens i make mistakes, im only human and u are as well

In general if you are capable of building your own system once you get over $200 for a CPU you may as well go to $250 and step up to the next generation with a new CPU and MoBo if the rest of your components can handle it.

Remember to take a look at where you will get the biggest bang for you buck in performance.

Look to get the biggest bang for you buck and save some for the next build. And watch out for component creep. You get that new CPU and you want faster RAM. You get both and you want something else. Before you know it you spent $400 and could have built a whole new system.

Make sure that the Quad cores you select are 1066 FSB or they will not run. I have the Intel Core2 Quad q9550 and neither of the 2 cpus run properly with more than a single DDR2 dimm installed.
