Best CPU cooler for me??

Hi peeps,

I need a CPU cooler for my I5 4690. The problems is I have a corsair carbide spec 01 (which has a max CPU height of 150mm) and a asrock H97 pro 4 motherboard. The motherboard doesn't seem to be as wide as a full ATX board, so the CPU is pretty close to the back of the case. I am in a huge dilemma so PLEASE HELP!!!

That's a non-overclocking CPU so the stock cooler will do fine. If you insist on an aftermarket cooler, snowctrl's chart should be useful.

Intel isn't AMD, their stock coolers are fine (sound-wise). If there are space issues, it may be best to stay with the stock cooler.

1, Hyper 212 EVO (if you're into spending money for a few degrees of a difference)
2, Stock cooler
3, Some cheap Thermaltake cooler that costs 10$

I wouldn't either. I suggested that because it would fit in his case well and there's a lot of high reviews. But the first option should be the 212 EVO.

This came just in from my friend who has the Carbide Spec 01 and I suggested the Hyper 212 EVO to him:

"Well I got the cooler today and it was a pain in the ass removing the old one. But this new one fits EXACTLY, 1mm off and it might have been too much. The quietest thing ever and really Impressed. Thanks alot!"

So I think you should go with it.

PCPartPicker gets the specs wrong sometimes. They probably want at least "x"mm of space before declaring it compatible. Because the EVO is such a tight fit, they don't have it on their list.

The hyper is not on that list, if the OP want's to risk it, go ahead.

We've brought up two Cooler Master Hyper coolers in this thread. And it's not a risk if there isn't a single thread complaining about the Hyper 212 EVO not fitting inside the case.

Agreed - in my experience pcpartpicker will not always spot case-fit incompatibilities

No, part picker is not always accurate. However for cooler sizes it is usually pretty forgiving. For example, I used a bitfenix Neos case with the Hyper 212 EVO before which PCPP registered as compatible, I had to bend the side pannel to make it fit...

The two coolers that have been suggested are the EVO and TX3.

The TX3 is a smaller version of the Evo, hence will fit in the case. The EVO should not fit. Send us a picture of a CM Hyper 212 EVO in a spec 01 then I will admit I am incorrect. But good luck with that - It wont fit.

I don't care whether or not you admit if you're incorrect or not. If Newegg Q&A has people saying the cooler fits inside the Spec 01 as well as my friend saying it fits, I'll take their word for it.

I was merely asking for photographic evidence. The guy on newegg said it was a 'tight' fit. Whether this means just got in, or had to bend the side panel I don't know (I suspect the latter)

I just want the OP to know that it can cause and issue if you get the Hyper (the ends of the heat pipes on the top stickout a lot).

When you get someone calling another forum member for having a different view on a topic, you know he is a small minded child who just wants an argument.

Thanks for all the reply's guys, its been really helpful.

I was going to get the EVO 212 originally but I'm pretty sure it wont fit in the spec 01 case. I think I will go for some kind of air cooler as its just to keep the noise down a bit and keep things a little bit cooler, I hear that low end liquid coolers can be quite noisy and not much difference in performance, so I think i will steer clear of them.

I'm thinking about either the Noctua NH-U9B SE2 or the Arctic Freezer 13 limited edition.

Both coolers you have there give the same temps (+-1 degree) so it is your choice. I would go with the noctua for the quiet fans.

The evo not fitting in the spec case has nothing to do with the partpicker,but with the official specs from both parts on their sites.
case max cpu height according to corsair is 157mm
cpu height evo is 159mm

The next should fit fine,have decent performance and are not too expensive,

I'm not sure what part of requesting photographic evidence after I've already cited two sources and calling another member a small minded child . I don't appreciate repeated skepticism after I've already supported my points.

The Newegg Q&A clearly said "it works great" as well as my friend who just got the CPU cooler a few days ago. In neither post did anyone suggest the bending of the side panel.

Sorry, but being stubborn doesn't entitle "having a different view on a topic". This "topic" is supported by facts. If you disagree with facts, good luck with that out there.
