Pretty straightforward question. I heard that one of the biggest limiting factors in overclocking is heat production. And seeing as how a coolers cheaper than a cpu and will last longer to boot. I was wondering wich I should go with?

Air or liquid. Pros or cons. Heres two im looking at.

I have an fx6350

Cooler Master Seidon 120V – Compact All-In-One CPU Liquid Water Cooling System with 120mm Radiator and Fano

Coler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan

Solution
Jonatron5 - that Seidon is crap, CM Hyper 212 Evo is the most solid option listed. Though, if You want some real OC power, go get Noctua NH-D14, ThermalRight SilverArrow, beQuiet! DarkRock 3 Pro, or Phanteks PH-TC14PE. I've got some clients, who managed to crank up the 6350 on NH-D14 up to 4,6x GHz.

Ok I saw the noctua your talking about and it looks quite impressive. You would reccomend that over the other options I've got?

Its quite an expensive cooler. I honestly dont plan on changing cpus till this summer at the earliest so it could definlye be worth the investment.and its the right size to fit both intel and amd boards.

My one hesitation is it says am3+ (with backplate) what does that mean?

Also physically will it fit onto my motherboard? I have no idea about the dimensions. I've got a full tower so im not worried about the case.

IGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Ill be honest I have absolutely no idea I pulled this ram out of my old hp. Unless anyone off the top of there head knows what sort of ram was used with an amd phenom vII.

I will be back with my computer this sunday evening and give you a definite answer

Also that raises another good point. Is there any significant boost in performance of overclocking ram? I mean im not a pc expert but my initial assumption is it would make loading screens quicker not really any fps boost.

Jonatron5 - did You forget to attach a picture of Your HP RAM? I so, please reattach it [on some pic hosting]. There is absolutely no boost in overclocking ram, well, actually yes, 1-2 fps in games, when You go extreme, but that's kind of not worth it. You're just enshortening life span of the ram module, when You're ocing it.

And the more ram, the faster the system, games don't lag, computer is more responsive, since many processes can be pre-cached in ram, and don't need to be sucked up from hdd/ssd all the time.

thanks a ton. HOw do you deiscern that from what I sent lols? Im gonna order it since its on sale. it says it needs a back plate to fit the am3+ board should that come with it or no?

It has a SecuFirm kit, but You need genuine backplate from Your motherboard, which is already there if I recall correctly. And simple, You don't have any coolers on Your memory modules, so they're low profile.

Pattern of low and medium profile:

Pattern of high profile modules:

Anyway, NH-D14 can take up to most of the high profile modules:
