Best cpu for am3 system gaming

I have an am3 board, what processor should I get for gaming

6300 or 8350 are good solid choices, 6 or 8 core and very good overclockers with the right cooling, motherboard and PSU.

My apologies, I was too quick and thought you were referring to the current generation of AM3+ platform and CPU's. For the older AM3 platform the best CPU would be a Phenom II x6, if you can get your hands on one.

What cpu do you have now?

A Phenom II X6 is the most you can get on a plain AM3

If you want New this is a good processor and overclocks well.

Otherwise a very popular Phenom II X4 965 can be had used for around $60-$70 and most will overclock to 4.2ghz

Also the X4 970 or X4 975 are good options but were less common so the 965 is most likely more readily available and cheaper
