I currently have a gateway DX4840 and I was wondering what the best CPU was that I could upgrade to with the h57 motherboard. I want to do gaming, like max settings GTA V with my GTX 760. Thanks!

secondly a gtx 760 isn't capable of hitting playable fps in 1080p at max settings on gta V

you need a gpu also. I recommend a 970 or a r9 380x. depends on your budget. 380x is cheaper but is still capable of full 40 fps on ultra settings gta V 1080p.

960 may have issues. its a bit slow for max settings, and nvidias next step up is over $100 more.
look up what the EXACT motherboard in that computer.

next look for supported cpu's for the exact motherboard that you found earlier.

then find benchmarks comparing what you have to what is possible.

OEM motherboards wont allow cpu upgrades beyond what they came with from the factory.

If you bought a mid to low optioned version of that desktop it may allow for a few minor upgrades. for example

had an HP lga 775 mobo fastest cpu on that socket is the core 2 quad, but that motherboards bios didn't allow for anything faster than a 2.66 ghz core 2 duo. do some research and read some numbers on your motherboard.
