I almost exclusively use my pc to game and I’m looking to upgrade my my cpu to improve that. I’m having trouble deciding between going for amd or Intel. I’m willing to spend around 300 on the cpu
My current spec are a 1070 and ryzen 5 1600 and a b350-f Mobo

Nothing wrong with what you have now. With a decent OC, that Ryzen gets real close to an i7-8700k in performance, which is usually well above the monitors refresh, so upgrading the cpu isn't really going to show any benefits unless your current fps while gaming is under refresh.

For example, I get 300fps in cs:go. My monitors are 60Hz. So it'd be the same performance at 200fps or 400fps.

With a $300 budget, going Intel would hurt, you'd need a mobo and cpu, the ddr4 is transferable, sticking with Amd, you could go for a 2700x (after a bios update), but you'd still be only a few fps higher due to better IPC on the few cores games actually use since you'd still be right around 4GHz anyways after OC.

I could not find the article, but I read somewhere here on toms' the 2700x is the best gaming cpu. Not because of the framerate, but because of all the things you can do at once. Such as recording and streaming, while gaming. Without putting stress on your cpu.

So ya, if you can afford it buy it. Don't forget to upgrade your bios for the new cpu.

Me personally, I'd wait. There's not enough difference between the 2 cpus. The 2700x is only the best if it's bought new, as part of a substantial upgrade, but just like the 2600x is the same 6c/12t as you have now with slightly higher stock clocks, the 2700x is nothing much more than a 1700, which is the same as you have now plus 2/4t. Considering games will generally use 2-8 threads, having 16 is only of any real use if doing other stuff like streaming on a regular basis. Great for ppl with a YouTube channel, doing reviews etc, but a waste for ppl who really don't.
