Im looking into upgrading my i5-4460 to something that will pair better with my 1060, since ive noticed that my CPU is old by doing some research. Everywhere its stating that the 1060 can run mostly almost any modern games at 60 fps 1080p, but mine cannot and i feel its my CPU thats holding my 1060 back.

Thing is my motherboard is a z97 pro gamer, and is only compatible with select i5's and i7's. I really didnt want to replace my motherboard, just wanted a new CPU to go with 1060. But im willing to take some advice on if i should really change my motherboard in general.

Just need help on which one would suit the best for gaming. I was hoping not to go over $300 in total.

Here is a list of all of the CPU's compatible with my motherboard

Problem is that used 4790k are way overpriced compared to their performance. I would pay 80 $ for one, but I doubt you find them at that price.

The other option is a platform upgrade, but with quality parts that is going to cost arround 450.

A used one is good. Also have you check my upgrade pick? its around $300.
I would avoid buying those parts you have listed. The A320 motherboard is as cheap as it gets, and if your on a budget, you do not need an aftermarket cooler.

Instead, I would get an ASRock B450M Pro4 motherboard for about $80, A Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 3200Mhz kit for about $75, and then the same CPU, the Ryzen 5 1600 for $145. That total is about $300, so it might end up being a little bit more, but the motherboard has more features, and is more future-proof, being upgradeable. More RAM will give you better performance, and buying 16GB now means a possible upgrade to 32GB in the future without buying all new RAM, if that interests you.

The Ryzen 5 will perform slightly better than the I7-4790k in most situations, and it has the real benefit of being a modern platform. Then Intel is still an ok choice, but not the one I would choose personally.

It should be avoided in any matters, but depending on his budget so yeah..

just because a 3.5 year old GPU might be maxed out with a lesser CPU is no reason to choose a CPU that will then still suck once given a good GPU later....

I'd look for an R5-1600/2600 and a B450 combo....which, frankly, should be 90% of most folks minimum gaming starting combo these days...
